What chokes for trp and skeet?

Have Rem870. Signed up for the fall shotgun league at Sac Valley as beginner.

I have Modified choke for the 870.

What choke would be best for a league like that? Do I need a selection, or stick to one?

For Trap, depending on your skill level... Mod, Imp Mod or Full

    For Skeet... Cyl or Sk

Are you shooting a 12 gauge? Modified will do you just fine at the 16 yard line. So will #8 shot. If you're shooting a 20 gauge, full might work better for you.
For skeet, Cyl or Sk as previously mentioned (even improved cylinder) #9 shot.

        ><

IC or Mod choke Trap .......Cyl or Skeet choke for Skeet

IC will work for both if you have to go with one choke

I was running an IC choke and would do ok. I recently switch out to a Modified choke and seem to be doing better. Modified choke seems to be getting me a "better" break, and "smashes" the clay target vs nicking it if that makes any sense.

            Yes, it is 12G.

Was out there Saturday with a friend trying both trap and skeet range. It is only second time I have done that, except for hand thrown clays. Have done some duck hunting successfully, but could defintely improve my shotgunning skills...

Sounds like an Express where it's screw-in chokes, but they only give you modified. Stick to the modified for 16 yard line trap. If you're reasonably quick on target, that's the best. If you start shooting handicap, might want to tighten up, but by the time you make the 20 yard line you'll be well versed. For skeet, get a cylinder choke. #8 shot for 16 yard trap and #9 for skeet.

Modified for 16 yard trap is good.

Enjoy the shooting and don't worry about the exact right choke for now. You'll learn that as you get more familiar with the games. Just concentrate on the mechanics for now, get down the stance, sight picture and follow through, one of the most important parts in shooting clays....or any moving target for that matter.

Start with a deep relaxing breath, holler "PULL", get yer bead on the bird, without looking at the bead at all, only see the bird, pull the trigger and follow the flight path through....broken bird!

I'm looking forward to it. I have shot rifle/pistol for years, but just never made it out to the shotgun range till recently. Should be fun, and hopefully learn a lot.

I shoot trap and the occasional sporting clay, and use Modified choke.

I'll recommend you try different chokes with your shotgun to get a feel of what work best for you.

                        Hitting reactive trargets = fun

Hitting reactive targets going 40mph = A ton of fun

                        Enjoy you time out there

Oddly enough, I shot my first 16 yard - 25 straight with improved cylinder.. though most people let the clays get out a bit further than I was allowing that day..

Make sure you pattern it with different chokes and different loads to make sure you are using the optimal combination.

Improved-modified, full (most popular), or x-full for trap... and skeet (most popular), improved-cylinder, or skeet 2 for skeet.

I personally use an improved-modified Angleport choke for trap. It came with my old BT-99 and actually patterns tighter than a lot of full chokes out there. You have to remember that not all chokes pattern equally in a particular gun. You can have two choke tubes and guns that are seemingly the same, but they both may pattern very differently. The only way to figure out how a particular gun and choke patterns is to test it at a patterning board, and even then that only tells you how it's patterning in 2 dimensions. The third dimension is the length of the shot string and that's just as important as the width and density of the pattern.

For skeet I just use two flush-fit Carlson's skeet chokes in my Citori XS Special. They're cheap and they work quite well.
