JChiggins change to Home defense pistol grip

i am ready to cut down my old JC higgins shotgun barrel for home defense. Its an old cheap gun so i am cutting it down. I don't like having expensive firearms laying around outside my safe for home defense. So where do i mark 18" to cut the barrel? It is 18" where it leaves the receiver or 18" where the threads start on the barrel? and it has to be 26" overall?
First pic is where the barrel leaves receiver, second pic is where the threads start on the barrel
    thanks for any help

18" minimum from the breech face with the weapon in battery, to the business end of the barrel.

Almost all HD shotgun barrels are 18.5" due to the exact question you are asking. The extra 1/2" keeps a misinformed LEO from hauling you off to jail.

So just cut it 18" from front of receiver.

CLOSE the action and stick a dowel of some sort down the barrel. That's how ATF measures it, or at least how an ATF agent told me they do

If it is one of the Sears shotguns built by High Standard (I think one was called the Model 30) you've got a real treasure---that would be one slick action! High Standard also manufactured riot guns for law enforcement agencies.

Its a model 20, i already put a pistol grip on it for home defense, i am cutting the barrel to 18 1/4" and kicking around whacking the barrel again if putting the poly choke back on is do-able. Yes its a nice action and slams fires, lol. Its been beat up for decades. I do also have a very very nice deluxe model 20 guage with a poly choke too, its a much nicer gun. Pics dont do it justice
