Recommend me a shotty for clay, trap, & skeet

    Hello my fellow Calgunners!

Recently I went to Los altos rod and gun, and they have changed their rules since the last time I was there for shooting clays. So now they recommend shotguns with barrels over 24" in order to use the manual traps. Since my barrel was 20.5" they wouldn't let me use it so I did not shoot that day and I felt like it was a waste of a trip.

Anyways I'm looking for a shotgun in 12ga with a barrel 24" that is semi. Any recommendations you guys I should get? I usually shoot doubles so I'm trying to keep it semi. But I'm willing to take a pump if necessary. I'm into pistol grip style shotguns but willing to take the long stock version also. Thanks in advance,

I was there too with 2 colleagues on Sunday, man it was really crowded in the manual trap area and we ended up shooting 2 rounds of e-trap while waiting for people to finish with their manual trap shooting.

There are more a lot of semi-auto shotguns that comes with 24" barrel or longer, what is your budget and what are you using now/do you like it?

Quick question regarding the manual trap throwers at LARG... can you use these by yourself or do you need to have someone with you to release the clay?

You can use them by yourself, I've seen people do it too. Basically, you'll have to stand close to the thrower, step on the release trigger and then shoot the clay.

No problem if you're good at mounting your shotgun quickly. I've never done it myself and I suspect I won't do well because I'm very used to shooting at a "high gun" position where my gun is already mounted.

I have however, seen a very good shooter do it. He was using an O/U, I've can't tell the brand but I suspect it is expensive because he was driving an expensive Audi, I remember it was a R8, a 6-figure dollar car. He launches 2 clays himself, mount the gun and shoots both of them out of the sky. Pretty impressive. I remembered this because I offered to help him throw the clays but he said it is ok he can do it himself.

Depending on what shotgun you already have, just buy a longer barrel

Realistically I'm thinking a benelli supernova. I'm deciding to go pump. But I would like to put a benelli collapsible stock but I don't know if its possible with the factory stock.???

My uncle that duck hunts has 17 benelli' small semi, but I'm not as successful as him, so I plan to go cheaper.

                      Fred,
You were asking for a trap, skeet type of SHOTGUN...

Go to Coyote Valley sporting clays and you can rent a gun there that will shoot clays of any kind.
You can even go in their vault and see what they have on consignment or even new and that should give you an idea.
If you seriously want to break clays you will not use a pump with a collapsible stock..
                      You only live once!

IMO, if you plan on shooting trap seriously, get an actual trap gun that patterns higher... 70/30 at least. You CAN shoot trap with a skeet gun that shoots 60/40 or 50/50, and I do at the moment, but I suppose it's more enjoyable when you've got the proper tool for the job. I like floating the bird quite a bit so a higher rib gun that throws a higher pattern would be a better choice. I have a Citori XS Special that I use for trap at the moment but on Sunday I'm supposed to check out a dude's '70s vintage BT-99. That way I'll have a gun for skeet and a gun for trap.

Whatever gun you decide to go with just stick with it and spend the money on shells and rounds. Later on you'll know which of the clays sports you want to invest more time in. People are usually better at one or the other - trap, skeet, or sporting clays. I happen to be a better trap shooter than skeet shooter. Few are truly gifted and are good at both or all.

I would not suggest using a video game gun or an airsoft gun to try to break clays. Instead, you might want to get a shotgun.

ATI has a stock for Benelli Supernova that has 6 collapsible positions. Pretty expensive though, $249.99.
