Picked one up at LGS and played with it a bit (no shooting). My very preliminary impressions:

    1) Heavy,
    2) Action was SMOOOOOTH,
    3) Heavy.

I was going to buy one when Big 5 had them for sale for $230 or around that I liked it how ever what killed it for me was that the barrel is fixed to the receiver I just did not like that. Thus I am still waiting for an 870 police magnum trade in to come up for sale in my area.

I have one. Shoots great, very smooth action, but it is heavy. If you are looking for a reliable pump shotgun and don't plan to change or add anything, its good for the price. But if you want to add a sling, decent set of sights, stock, pistol grip or basically add or change anything, get something else. There is no aftermarket for these and parts for other brands won't fit without a lot of modifications.

The Maverick 88 is in this price range and lots of parts are interchangeable with the Mossberg 500. The Maverick is also assembled in Texas.
If price is the main motivation, I would seriously consider the Maverick.

Good overall value for the money...

Its all steel shotgun so its heavy.

                Maverick 88...lotta plastic parts..

If you can find a vendor that sells from Davidsons wholesale it comes with lifetime warranty....

if you only going to shoot a few boxes of shells a year they work great

                no aftermarket parts for it...

I do not own either gun. I ended up skipping the Maverick and buying the Mossberg 500. However, I have heard nothing but good from Maverick owners.
If it was your money and you were considering only the RIA or the Maverick for the same price, which would you actually choose?
I am not criticizing, I am just asking.

My personal choice would be the M5 over a maverick...

I would choose a 500 1st....remember not all 500 are created equal some models have better parts than others...
Than a M5 before a Maverick...just based on percentage of broken ones that I have seen...and ones I have owned and shot...

The M5 will take more abuse than a 88

                      Thank you for your input.
You obviously have more experience than I do with these guns. I like RIA, but I was assuming the Maverick was better. Sounds like I was wrong.
