    cz 712

Does anyone else have a cz 712 or know anything about them?
Here's my question/situation a buddy of mine was using it today at raahauges with me gun is mine he was test firing for possible purchase I helped him out getting to understand how to load and safety for the first 5 or 6 stations then let him do it on his own. A few stations later he had shot 15 to 20 shots by now he had a good understanding of the gun but I'm guessing he hit the feed button on the bottom while he had a round in the chamber because when he fired it was two bangs with in milliseconds of each other the first round fired and ejected the next round made it half way into the chamber before it detonated and did some damage to my shotgun not sure how extensive just yet have it at a local gun builder/gunsmith to be evaluated. Does anyone have any insight on what could have happened.
    Thank you in advance

Ouch, good thing no one was injured.

I don't have a CZ myself but this sounds more like a ammo problem than a gun problem. Normally, there should be no way for a round to go off when it is loaded in the gun, and yes, you can even have a round in the lift ramp when a round a chambered, Benelli owners call this "Ghost loading".

I think what might have happened is that one of the round is faulty and the primer went off when the bolt pushes it into the chamber.

Do you still have the 2nd round that went off outside the chamber? Do you see a primer strike?

I have one and have no idea how that could happen.

Sounds like the ammo may have been the problem.

              ><

If the shell went off with a bang and not a fizzle , one thing is for sure.....the primer went off and I can't think of a way to do it without a strike. I have heard of guns going off out of battery due to mechanical failure, but never ammo failure

please get back when the GS is done and you have a possible answer...it would be good info to pass along

My first shotgun was a CZ712 and it blew up to pieces in my hands. The cause of this catastrophic failure is a defective firing pin. It snaps in two inside the bolt and the front side of the broken pin gets stuck inside the pin channel, sticking out of the bolt face. When you press the bolt release button the broken pin hits the primer of the shot shell before the bolt locks. Most of the pellets are ejected through the barrel but the rear side of shot shell not being fully chambered and locked it ruptures. The gasses will blow rearward and cause the aluminum receiver and the wood forearm to break into pieces.
I was very lucky my injuries were minor, only a couple of wood splinters and two blisters on my hands. If I had pushed the bolt release button with the shotgun shouldered I could have lost an eye.

For those of you who own CZ 712: if your gun didn't blew up (yet) call their customer service and they will send you an updated firing pin if your gun was manufactured in the first year or two of production.

Keep an eye on your hammer a well. some initial batches of the 912 had poor quality hammers that would crack. The symptom is the gun runs away on you till empty. CZ will replace the hammers with the new design, at no charge I believe.

Finally got through to cz due to the fact I bought it more than 5 years ago. I only have around 200 rounds through it always used a snap cap cleaned it along with all of my other weapons every 3 months to make sure no dust or anything could gun it up and to oil to insure no rust and after use of course. This was only used to hunt guess I should have read reviews on it periodically bought it in 06 upgraded to an xtrema 2 in 09. I guess it's my fault for not using the tar out of it during its warranty period so it would have blown up on me then. I just wish cz would have taken care of me or anyone else in my situation knowing and admiring that the gun had a flaw. Sorry for the rant just need to get it off my chest.

That's bull****. They really ought to make a bigger effort into getting recalls out to the public eye. I realize they can't track everybody down who owns one, but they should post them in more gun shops, ranges, etc. etc. and send notices to confirmed owners. Easier said than done, of course, but it's better than someone getting hurt. Glad you guys were alright. CZ shotguns are questionable to say the least. Most owners seem to be happy with their CZ's but I just don't know. I really wish they would actually try their hand at manufacturing their own shotguns instead of rebranding Turkish Huglu's. I was considering a Redhead Deluxe but for that kind of money I decided to pick up a used Browning Citori. Saved some money and got a way better gun with a bunch of extras. Until then I'll stick with Brownings and Berettas.

Beretta, franchi, and winchester for me now. worst part is I did like this gun it was great to me always went bang when I asked especially the last time. It felt good had good balance not too bad on the recoil cycled all loads just too bad it didn't last or get backed by its make like it should but that's this man's opinion
