    Chokes

How can you tell if a choke can take steel shot?

The choke in question is a 20gauge remington remchoke in Modified.

Got it from a buddy and he has run some steel through it and there are no signs of peening

Dont plan on running much if any steel but wanting to know

Most chokes will handle steel just fine. It's the barrels on older shotguns that had fixed chokes that you will have a problem with. Example........Browning Citori with interchangeble chokes, steel ok. Browning Superposed with fixed chokes, steel NOT ok. Hope that helps.

The best bet would be to look at the manufacturer's web site, or contact their technical support and ask about it. Normally, if a choke cannot shoot steel shot, it will be labeled clearly.

On my Benelli chokes, it is also labeled on the choke itself. Modified is the most constriction I can use with steel shots on mine, it might be ok with yours too but check with the manufacturer to be sure.

Well today I headed over to Gander to grab chokes and they ended up having that combo pack
For some reason it was on a clearance rack for $15
          Snagged it

                  Heres all three chokes
All made from the same material, all have that 3 dot pattern
Only the full is marked Steel or Lead

-just to make sure, you understand that lead shot acts very differently going through a choke than steel shot.

So a modified choke using lead shot will "act" like a modified choke, where the same choke will "act" like a full choke for steel shot. Some chokes will have two markings, one for lead shot and one for steel shot. So notice that a full choke for lead is too tight to be used for steel shot.

This table is shows the relationships:

So running steel through Full choke would be too restrictive?

For some chokes, yes, but there are full chokes that are rated for steel. Call the manufacturer and ask. Much safer than trusting someone on the internet... unless it just so happens to be a company rep. :P I know my Carlson's extended Invector+ tube is rated for steel. And a lot of guys will use a bigger shot size when switching over from lead to steel. Maybe one or two sizes up.

BTW, you scored a GREAT deal on that choke set. Chokes usually go for $25 a piece for flush fit and $40+ for extended.

And don't forget to always scrub and grease the choke threads after each use.

According to Remington all Rem-choke are rated for lead or steel.......................BUT they recommend nothing tighter then mod for steel.

*Figure one size difference between lead and steel: a Mod choke will pattern like a full with steel shot and so on.

The cheapest Ive seen a single Remchoke from an online retailer is $15
So I got 2 for the price of 1 essentially, couldnt pass that up

That makes sense on going one size smaller with steel

A good graphic showing shot string for steel shot. Notice conical pattern is tighter than lead and shot string is shorter.
