Plus you almost get a full 10 rounds worth of xd9 ammo, for every trigger pull (assuming you are using 00 buckshot [.33]) of your scattergun...at least, that is the way I look @ it.... my .02

Watch for used barrels on gunbroker and ebay

              Easy peasy
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
              (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

I agree with the above posts. Use a shotgun for HD, a handgun is only suitable for backup duty. I'd buy a longer barrel.

I have an 870 with an 18" barrel that I bought for HD. I recently bought a 26" barrel for it on ebay for ~$100 and its easy to switch them out. I also bought a magazine cap & shorter spring so I could take off the extended mag tube if I want. (FYI - don't buy the new barrel from CTD, they don't support CA gun owners).

I have seen used 26" and 28" 870 barrels selling for under $100 on Gunbroker. You can get (almost) any year 870 barrel - even the highly polished Wingmaster. There may be a few years that are not interchangeable. I think I read that somewhere, but I am not 100% sure.

                      870 Barrel

Just what is an "ideal" barrel length is up to the shooter and it differs per the kind of action of a gun, but for your 870 a 28" vent rib field barrel will be fine for casual skeet and trap. I bought mine with a short barrel and picked up a field barrel for sale on one of the trap sights for $85 used. That was 3 years ago. A 26 will work, but is a bit short.

I bought a lightly used 28 barrel on ebay and got it cut down to 23 and threaded for choke for under 150.

Thank you all for your help. I Bought a Remington Express Magnum barrel on Ebay for 129.09 shipped. It is used and has some wear but nothing extreme. There are parts where the finish is fading but as long as I keep it oiled it should be fine. (I think)
Now I am looking forward to my "Intro to shotgun sports" class at metcalf.
