Cheap and Reliable 12ga Shells for clay???

What does everyone recommend for beginners? I have my shotgun on order and I need to pick up some ammo but since I'm brand new to shotgun I don't know what to start with... #7.5, #8... 7/8oz, 1oz, 1-1/8oz... etc... Should I try some of each?

The 100rd bulk packs at Walmart is probably the cheapest and most readily available stuff around. The Federal packs are generally more highly regarded compared to the Winchester-branded stuff.

I agree with Brandon, federal bulk packs from Walmart.

Another vote for Walmart bulk if you can find it for $25. Federal only tho. Too many guns jams with Winchester bulk.

Or invest in a small lee shot loader for $75.. Loading shot for $0.11 per shell. #8

I buy cases of Estate target loads from Cabelas, $6.99 per box of 25 free shipping usually. For trap, I prefer 1oz 7.5 shot

They all work fine. Buy the cheapest #7-8.5 Since you are in the S. Bay I recommend you sign up for a skeet class with "The Feeder" He is usually a sticky at the top of this shotgun forum. Inexpensive and you'll learn a lot. Just to remember to constantly listen and watch others when you are not shooting 'cause when your'e shooting it's easy to forget most of what you learned.

The Federal bulk pack, but it doesn't work on all shotguns. They will go "bang", but the issue is a fail to eject one.

OP, is your new gun a pump, over/under, or semi-auto? If it's a pump or semi, you can run what ever is cheapest.

Get the Federal from Walmart. Every Walmart that sells ammo should have it.

If you have a shotgun that will not eject a Federal bulk pack, get rid of your shotgun or at least clean the gas chamber. If that doesn't work, get a pump action -- you don't deserve a semi-auto.

What shotgun did you buy and what do you intend to use it for? Trap? Skeet? Or something else?

Go to Eddy's in Mountain View and pick up a case of Federal there... $65/case is $6.50 a box. I prefer #8's but #7's are just fine too. Depends on your gun's pattern but don't worry about that just yet.

I ended up getting the CZ 612 Field 28" pump action 12ga. It will serve as an all purpose clay gun to start with. If I enjoy shooting shotgun enough to justify a much more expensive over/under I will get one in the future.

I stopped by my local walmart and they were out of the cheap Federal bulk packs in 12ga. They had a bunch of 20ga on the shelf though.

Has anyone shot these Herters shells from Cabelas?

How do they compare to the Federal Top Gun shells found around the same price elsewhere.

+1. I have always just used the 100rd packs from Walmart. Never any issues

Remington Gun Clubs from Bass Pro.

I like the 2-3/4dr loads with 1-1/8 oz #8 shot.
