    Low Noise/Low Recoil Shells

Winchester makes a low noise/low recoil shell in 12 and 20 gauge, the Winlite. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Are they actually any quieter than normal loads, or is just it a marketing ploy?

Low recoil loads are slower, have less felt recoil and sound the same as standard shells. They reduce the recoil by using less powder which slows down the load.

They still make enough noise to bring attention.

low recoil is still going to hurt your ears. the only way to shoot pain free in a closed room is with a can and sub sonic ammo.

I have some WinLite WL1200 low-recoil 9-pellet buckshot. I haven't shot it yet, but people online have done comparisons and believe they are exactly the same stuff as the Ranger low-recoil 9-pellet shells.

I use them in an old 1897 Winchester. They seem to have less noise and certainly have less recoil than anything else I've shot in 12 gauge.

I havn't tried the Winchester lower recoil 12 ga. stuff yet, but the Federal and Remington low recoil rounds are great and noticeable less kick---important to old-guy ex-motorcycle racers with hurts from decades ago…
Oh, and look into the newer modern recoil pads---another big help with kick...

Thanks for all the responses! I'm always on the lookout for anything that's lower noise, since it really makes my son wince. He doesn't mind recoil, but the loud "boom!" bothers him.

Back in the good old days, this would have been solved with a box of .22lr. Ah, nostalgia!

I hope your son is wearing hearing protection.

They do reduce the felt recoil but are still loud enough to damage your hearing. I have a couple of friends that buy them for their wives and daughters to shoot at the range.

We always wear hearing protection, without exception. Even with hearing protection the boom is pretty loud, though. It may not seem that way to someone who has been shooting for years, but to a kid without much experience it's still loud.

I've been told that custom molded earplugs work very well, I might give those a try.

I will sometimes double plug my ears. Soft foam insert, cheap, throw away, and use ear muffs over that. Seems to work for me and other shooters I know use this. Especially in competition with guys using AR's with comps and open comp pistols.

My daughter uses the low recoil 20 gauge Winlite birdshot. They are pretty mild but still not subsonic.

I love my custom fitted earplugs when shooting shotguns but also double up on my protection when shooting near large calibers or lots of people. The only issue with the fitted plugs is how quickly he might grow out of them.

Custom molded earplugs can be had for a great value from Dan at Triple B Clays in So. El Monte. He is there most weekends, and charges all of $45 for a pair of perfect fitting silicone earplugs.

Everyone in my family has a pair - comfortable, great protection, and years of use ahead of us.

Most importantly for me, they are easily put in and removed, and make the shotgun blasts nothing more than a muffled bang. They also don't interfere with gun mount.
