Building your own shotgun

Hi guys,

I'm newly registered on this forum but thanks to the current administration, I'm becoming an avid gun fan. I bought a Kimber TLE Custom in 2008 and I've just finished building my own CA legal AR-15. I am very interested in building my own shotgun, rather than purchasing it and waiting for our benevolent politicians to approve my right to defend myself.

I've searched the forums and haven't found any 'kits' or instructions for doing so and was wondering if there was something like this readily available.

ummmmmm I don't think there is. ive never even seen a "stripped shotgun receiver" for sale any where.
and just because an AR 15 is like putting legos together, doesn't mean any other firearms are.

I'm not 100% sure about this but I think the closest thing you can do is to buy a Remington 870, tear it apart, put in custom parts you like and maybe also coat it to your own preference.

This is probably the closest thing you can get to building your own shotgun.

Just buy a shotgun. By a double barrel shotgun, and fire two blasts in the air.

Could a virgin shotgun receiver be built into a pistol using a rifled barrel?

Black Aces tactical sells shotgun receiver "kits"(for their detachable magazine system things) using mossberg parts(mag, action tube, etc.).

Of course you can always buy stripped down receivers on gunbroker for various models in various states of... assembly/disassembly/distress.

Various companies over the years have gotten their hands on bare receivers for sale in bulk(for who knows what reason), but it's not common.

It's just not really cost-effective, since most of the pump receivers out there don't have a lot to them, and aren't a very big portion of the cost of the shotgun itself. By the time you buy a barrel, magazine, stock, forend, trigger group, action components, etc. you're probably going to be over the cost of just buying the thing.

Then for your break action shotguns, the fitting is going to take some serious gunsmithing, possibly fabricating parts.

Semi autos... there's enough browning auto 5's out there in need of a home that could make a decent project gun for restoration/customization.

Once you get past all of those factors, there just aren't many buyers out there who'd be willing to buy bare receivers compared to say.. AR lowers or even AK parts kits.

My main objective is building my own is privacy.

Saving a few hundred bucks isn't the objective. It's for personal use and I'd prefer it not be registered.

The AR-15 did require a CNC as I didn't have the jig for it, so I'm game to try something similar.

The black aces tactical would have to be registered, as you'd need to transfer it like any other firearm receiver.

Now you're talking about "80%" receivers, and the answer to that would be "no, they don't exist".

edit: Now that I think about it, you might be able to find some rockethub scam selling 500 or 870 "80%" receivers, but I haven't actually heard of any. (Considering how little there is to most pump or semi auto shotgun receivers, I can't imagine the ATF issuing any letters of determination for a "finish it yourself" version.)

I purchased a stripped mossberg 500 receiver off gunbroker, built it up, runs like a champ.

Receivers are gonna be the problem, like others have said. With that said, I'll be building an 1897 sometimes soon. Got a cut receiver I'll attempt to reweld. So it's out there.
