Nebraska: Cornhuskers and Sporting Clays (and I took pictures)

Since I had never worked (or shot sporting clays) in Nebraska, when my boss said somebody needed to go, I jumped at the chance.

You always here about how flat Nebraska is, but really the drive from Omaha to Lincoln is thru some pretty lush rolling hills. And corn fields, lots and lots and lots of corn fields. The town of Lincoln is a pretty small college town but there is a fun section called "The Haymarket" with quite a few bars and restaurants.

About an hour north of Lincoln is Oak Creek Sporting Club in the town of Brainard www.oak-creek-club.com . In So Cal our clubs are open during the week, but in Nebraska they're open (during the week) by reservations only. I emailed them and they said "no problem".

I talked with Jim (xsshooter on shotgunworld.com) and we met up there, one day after work. To say Oak Creek is in the middle of nowhere would be an understatement. It's actually the next exit past the middle of nowhere

They have two 10-stations courses, red and green. We couldn't decide which one to shoot, so the only viable choice was... to shoot both of them.

I was really impressed with the courses. The red course reminded me of Upland Hunt Club in Rockford (IL), and believe it or not, the green course reminded me of Grouse Ridge in Wasilla (AK). The targets were good, and we shot both courses as true pairs, just to spice things up a little.

Afterwards we went to the thriving metropolis of Brainard (population 330). They have a church, a fire station, a VFW hall, a bar and a HUGE grain silo. Which one do you think we went to?

I think I may need go back in the fall for a little more "work". Now when is pheasant season again?

Looks like a nice layout. My cornhusker roots are saying I should have been there.

Where are you from? We're having a tough time getting enough employees in Lincoln. Not enough population to pull from.

                  270,001

Just joking, about 300 for a call center. It's not a great job, but it pays the bills. I think there are other call centers in the area. So maybe our perspective employees are working there.

300 would be a lot for Lincoln.

Particularity with school not is session...best of luck, I am sure you will get staffed up.

                        I forgot to add,

Piezano’s: Meh, the pizza is nothing special. They have s small parking lot, so you may have to park around the block on the street. Other than that, nothing to write home about.

Yia Yia’s Pizza & Beer: Meh, the pizza is nothing special, but they do have a good selection or beers from around the world.

Southwest Pit BBQ: Ok bbq, nothing to write home about. Way too much bbq sauce. It was drenched on, and really that's all I could taste.

Phat Jack's BBQ: Way better than Southwest BBQ, but still not as good a Lucile's BQQ in So Cal. I had the Jack Jr. Three ribs and brisket.

The ribs were good and had a nice smoke ring. The brisket was too well done, with no smoke ring or smoky taste at all.

Their sauces are pretty good, however.

Valentinos is the "original" Lincoln pizza joint...its a love/hate kinda thing.

Did you get to see the capital building? It is listed as a modern architectural wonder of the world by the American Institute of Architects.

Meh, Lincoln is too big for me. my family is from Rushville, NE., in the NE part of the state. The pheasant hunting is amazing once you get to know your neighbors! Reminds me of quail hunting down in Baja MX. in the '90"s; And you wouldn't believe the elk sheds my friend has found on his 5000 acre farm. World class!

I have an Uncle who is a retired Fire Chief in Lincoln, great guy but a little too liberal for me.

Rushville is a one horse town with no stoplights, one general store, one stop-n-rob(quicky-mart) a Napa auto parts store, a liquor store, and 3 bars. Just the way I like it.

I am going back there next month and can't wait!
And in all fairness, just because JMB did it doesn't mean anything. He'd have won WWII with a soup can, a fork, and a couple rocks. Seriously, even McGuyver and Steven Hawking get together every now and then and are like "How the **** did he do that?..."

Very nice, I'm very tempted to bring along my shotgun on my next business trip.
