    Pistol Grip Shotgun

So I currently have a standard Maverick 88 12 GA, I want to put a pistol grip on it (just for fun, not for serious purposes).

I know you can only buy a pistol grip shotgun if you are 21, so my question is, does that mean it is a handgun? If I put a pistol grip on my shotgun will I have to do an HSC for it? Or can I just buy the pistol grip and slap it on there?

    Thanks.

    Currently what I have:

Buy the pistol grip, slap it on there then take it off after you realize you hate it and it's dumb. No it doesn't become a handgun, it's still a shotgun.

No. People between 18-21 can only buy rifles and shotguns from retail firearms dealers. "Shotguns" that comes from the factory with no buttstock are not legally shotguns, but rather are "other" firearms. Since an "other" is not a rifle or a shotgun, you need to be 21. Same deal with stripped lowers.

      Correct on all counts.

birdshead is the only way to go if you really want a PGO shotgun. shockwave makes a great grip. http://shockwavetechnologies.com/site/?page_id=14
i was going to get one till i decided on keeping the full stock and got something else.

i love shotguns, they are my favorite type of gun to shoot. PGO's look cool, but they are not fun to shoot. you cant fully use the sights so you just point at the target and shoot from the hip. whatever you do NEVER hold a PGO close to your face. i have seen what a PGO did to some noobs face, more than a few teeth were damaged.

get the birdshead if you really want a PGO, you will have a somewhat comfortable gun and one that stands apart from all others.

As the owner of this, I am in complete agreement with the previous posters, you are wasting your time and money turning a functional shotgun into a PGO, they are not that fun to shoot. Fun for perhaps 3-4 shells, then kind of obnoxious. The only reason I bought this one when I could (AOWs are kind of a dead issue in California now, not sure if any of the FFL07/02 dealers will still let you apply for a stamp because of pending legislation?) was that Leland Yee, Darryl Steinberg, Hannah Beth Jackson and Kevin Deleon all wet themselves when I took delivery of it. PGO shotguns are much better in video games and movies. In real life, not that great.

I owned a m500 PG. I loved it but hated the PG functions. I figured it was easier to sell it off and buy a normal stock one. Don't get me wrong, most guns I shoot with has an PG. For Shotgun, especially m500 the safety toggle switch becomes annoying having to leave your grip to get to it.

Also, in PG form the recoil is directed to the web of your thumb and finger. You'll feel it there more then anything else.

The only way you feel the recoil in the web of your hand is if the weapon isn't properly shouldered. People tend to get sloppy with a PG shotty and depend too much on the PG to hold the weapon in place, instead of pulling it into their shoulder as they should.

IMHO It's because of the AR culture, since the kick from those are so light that proper stock placement has almost become a thing of the past. Which is another reason we see so many of the, "I shot a .308 and it really kicks" threads.

The Mossberg will never be ergonomic with a pistol grip due to the above mentioned safety location. The work around is to retrofit a trigger assembly from the Maverick 88 which has the safety on it and to disable the top mounted safety.

MUCH easier to simply buy an 870 if you feel the need to go pistol grip.

Mossbergs do work well with those birdshead grips though.

I think they're talking about pistol grip only, not pistol grip with the stock

Lol, yeah probably exactly what I'll do. I just want to try it out for myself, and the pistol grip I'm looking at is only $21 or so.

OK then my comment obviously doesn't apply in that case.

To prevent pain in the web in that instance, the arm should be allowed to move rearward under recoil instead of trying to prevent all movement. With a pump shotgun the movement has no affect on the action, unlike how it could cause a semi-auto to short stroke.

Lol yeah.....not the worst thing that could've happened to him. That looked like a 20GA but I've heard bad stories of guys seriously messing up their faces like that.
