Yes, if you have a rifled barrel, you should use sabot slugs. If your gun is a cylinder/smooth bore, you should use rifled or Foster slugs.
You can also get a smooth bore barrel with interchangeable rifled and cylinder choke tubes, which would allow you to use all of the above types of slugs-- but usually with less than optimal accuracy as compared to a fully rifled barrel. -
You can shoot sabots in a smoothbore but you generally lose the accuracy which is the reason you would be shooting a sabot in the first place. However, I have seen one smoothbore shoot sabots remarkably well. About 2" groups at 75yards.
"Rifled" Foster type slugs generally shoot poorly in a rifled barrel. The grooves cast/swaged in the slug don't grab the swallow rifling and/or run contrary to each other.Luck favors the prepared.
