    Ammo Problem, Need Help

If this has been covered i couldnt find it.

I unloaded my 590 today to clean it and noticed a problem with the shells that were in my tube (Winchester Super X Buckshot).

These all came out of the tube. All have dents or holes in the tip. The first one pictured above was completely penetrated and leaking out.
I also have a box of Olin buckshot (made by Winchester) with the same dents/holes in the shells.

    Possibly relevant info...
-All the ammo that has this problem was in the shotgun at one time.
-I dont have any more SuperX or Olin that hasnt been in the gun to compare
    -All purchased at Walmart
-None of my other ammo (Fed, Win Universal, etc from Walmart) has the holes
-Mossberg 590 w no modifications other than side saddle and sling swivel tube cap
    - No apparent problems with tube, follower or elsewhere in the gun
    - Months ago i shot some very old ammo through the gun that got crap everywhere, cleaned it since then.

Is this a manufacture issue with Winchester? Could my gun somehow be causing this?

    Thanks for any help.

Having none of that brand to compare it to I can only give a guess. It almost looks like the ends are compressed. This could be caused buy loading the mag tube completely and letting it sit for an extended period of time. The pressure on the shells from the mag spring can slightly deform them. If the seal on the end of the breaks it could be from that pressure. I down load tubes for guns that stay loaded for that very reason. Just a guess. Of course others will post in how their HD has been loaded to the max for 50 years with no deformation of the shells. But I can't find out where to get that Super Ammo at.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

It is not your shotgun, it is the Winchester Super X buckshot. I have those buckshots myself, also bought at Walmart, 3" 00 buckshot with 15 pellets. They were my very first buckshots and I noticed some of the white, wax like stuff coming out even before I load them.

I switched to Fiocchi low recoil 00 buckshot partly because of this, also partly because the recoil is a little too much even on a Benelli semi-auto with its ComforTech stock.

They're nice at the range though, I can get very tight patterns with them using a Modified choke on my Benelli Supersport. At 25 yards most of the shots landed within a 6x9 inch area. See this:

Don't load them into the magazine tube though to avoid the white stuff getting stuck in there. I load them one at a time via the ejection port and closing the bolt.

^^^^^ this.....plus the quality of the hulls ....each manufacture uses top shelf hulls and low cost hulls for different lines of their shells.

The white stuff leaking out is buffer, not a big deal, other than messing things up cosmetically. As long as the pellets are staying put, you should be fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess i should avoid or atleast inspect winchester shells from now on.

I cant imagine the shotgun causing it. Its a circular cutout pressed inward, and theres no visible deformation. And aside from the flat-faced follower, nothing contacts that part of the hull.
