Rock Island m5 pump shotty...Brand new, but completely covered in oil?

Hey guys, just received my m5 yesterday, and noticed the plastic bag it came with is sealed, and the gun is completely greased up and covered in oil. Is there a reason for this?

Also, I'm planning on selling it to a pawnshop, he agreed to price for about 150, (I'm losing about 100 bucks.) I just dont have the time to clean up the grease, so I will be asking two questions here.

    1. Is the oil covered gun normal?

    2. When I sell to shop, what paperworks would they need? Thank you!

    1. Sounds to me like the oil is there as a preservative to protect the gun from rusting while in storage. Normal.

    2. Bring everything: your gov't issued ID, the gun's sales receipt, proof of residency like a recent electric/water/gas bill.

Why sell it so soon? (not that it is any of my business, though)

My RIA Tactical 1911 was also coated with oil. I think RIA just does that. I'd much rather have an oily gun than a rusty one.

Maybe he is hoping to get a PM from a member offering to buy it from him. No one loses 100 bucks if they dont have to.

just got a gun, complaining that it's oiled (better than being covered in rust, no?), and immediately selling it for a loss... i don't get it.

The gun itself costs $200 (which is a deal for an apparently nice pump shotgun).

I dunno, maybe OP has so much money (then why buy a cheaper shotgun?) that he's willing to toss half the cost of the gun away because he doesn't want to clean off the oil?

True, but the shop will not buy the gun back from me. The price that I sell it at, will exclude the tax and dros, then immediate depreciation for taking it out of the shop. Plus, $250 isn't a big deal, and no I'm not swimming in money but I am quite comfortable.

I might hold off on selling this though, thanks for the advice guys!

All the Pietta BP revolvers I've bought look like they were dipped in oil then put in a plastic bag as did my RI 1911, was easy to clean off and all were rust free.

Use starting fluid to remove the oil. Just make sure to lubricate afterwards as starting fluid will remove all oil & grease & leave the shotgun prone to rust.

Its supposed to be covered in oil. Those guns make a long *** boat ride over to 'Murica from the Philippines. Where are you located?
Why not just sell it on the used longun forum?

Or did you go and try to shoot it covered in packing oil, burning that oil up and leaving crud all over the shotty?

Do yourself a favor and buy a can of brake cleaner or gun scrubber. Spray the hell out of the gun, then clean it as normal. Lube as normal, plus making sure to leave a very light coat of oil on all metal parts, since you just removed ALL traces of oil.

Brake cleaner is cheap. Takes out all the work of degreasing. If you can't do that much, then you're going to have a hard time doing the normal cleaning of your weapon anyway, and shouldn't plan on ever shooting it.

Cleaning guns is just part of gun ownership. Try buying a Mosin Nagant or other military surplus rifle. They deliberately dunked whole rifles in vats of cosmoline, which dries to a hard crust and permeates wood stocks, stays stuck in the chamber causing a sticky bolt. Cleaning off 6 month old grease is a small price to pay to not have a rusty shotgun on purchase day, like the chinese 12 gauges Big 5 was selling 10 years ago with rust on them NIB.

Honestly, now that I think about it, if the OP can't figure this out maybe he shouldn't be a gun owner...

I suspect a troll, he should be happy it's packed in oil & grease.

OP sounds like someone trying to dispose of a stolen weapon for the first time. Otherwise his post makes absolutely no sense.

"Just received" in a sealed bag? So the LGS that sold the M5 to you didn't open the bag to wipe away the grease/oil to verify the serial number so it could be entered on the registration form as required by law now?

Perhaps the OP should contact Rock Island's customer service and get a warranty tag????

On the off chance this is a real question, of course the weapon is supposed to be covered in oil. It was shipped across the Pacific Ocean and everyone knows how wonderful the salt air is for an unprotected guns finish.

A can of Gun Scrubber and the bothersome oil will be gone. Then re-lube it with whatever product you prefer.

                              This thread makes zero sense.
