Older Mossberg 500 -- adding a new barrel

A friend recently gifted me an older Mossberg 500. I don't know much about it -- wood stock, 3" chamber, 5+1 capacity, and a short 18.5" or 20" barrel choked at cylinder. I was thinking about adding a 28" barrel so I could use the gun as a backup for clay sports, for hunting, and such.

Is there anything I need to look out for when buying the barrel, or does everything pretty much work no matter how old the gun is? My preference would be to get a barrel that can take interchangeable chokes.

They should all interchange with the same magazine lengths. You have the 5 +1, barrels for those are much more common. What you're looking for is called an Accu Choke barrel.
Look around the marketplace here or try eBay. If you get lucky, you might pay $50, but expect $75-100.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Yeah, no problems with swapping modern barrels. I have my grandfathers 500 made in 1968. It came with a 28" barrel but since I've owned it I've also purchased a 24" rifled & scopes barrel & an 18" barrel. They all work fine.
