    870 ?

Ok I just pick up my Remington 870 and something that I have never encountered was all this brownish stuff when I was wiping it down. Rust? Oil? Maybe some other type of sealant? Any thoughts? I just never seen this on any of my firearms well other then my Mosin from 1934 but that was expected.

The first time you wipe it down its grease. The second time you wipe down a 870 it will be rust.

You have to be more specific or post pics. Is it a new gun? If so, it's probably just some grease from the factory. Rust usually has a distinct smell about it. Does it smell like rust to you if you can't visually tell the difference?

Read the manual. I think it evens mentions the packing grease and to clean it before firing if my poor memory is correct.

Yep, factory grease. Clean the heck out of it, especially pay attention to the chamber. Scrub it like mad or you will have problems with failure to extract.

I wouldnt stress about it this much, the grease is pretty thin, i doubt it would cause many problems. once you heat up the gun its gonna run.
Wd40 + toothbrush + rag to wipe it off = good to go.

Just factory grease. Clean it well and lube it.
Note: Prior to shooting it the 1st time, lube up the bolt assembly, chamber, & action bars. In other words, run it a little on the wet side.

Sorry but no pics. Didn't think about it. Yes the 870 is new right out of the box. Looked like rust but didn't smell like it. Wasn't sure about grease though. I did clean and clean and some more. The finish was a bit rough but I have noticed that with most newer guns. This was the first time out 7 that I have that this has occurred.
Now just need to get the time to test her out.

Really? I never cleaned my chamber on my 870 before I shot it and I've never ever had a single issue.

Yes, not a prob with most, but occasional FTE is a known issue with some 870s, usually as they heat up or when using cheap ammo. The common solution is to polish the chamber, it's commonly thought that caked on factory grease or varnish is sometimes the culprit. Since it sounds like the OP's 870 has got a lot of stiff grease, seems to me it might eventually be an issue. I'm just suggesting he be thorough in the chamber.

I should have qualified my statement. Thanks for checking me.

Congrats on your new scattergun, you will love it!
