Bolt unable to open after firing

Firearm with problem is a NEW Remington 870 Magpul.

I've gone through 150 shells with it, no problems. Then come today at the range, every other shell fired, I could not pump the action. Would come back only 1-3mm and not budge. The breech release was also stuck in the depressed position. Strongarmed it and sort of broke it free. What could be the cause of this? Also sometimes (maybe 1 out of 10) the ejecting shells will not clear and will obstruct the bolt from closing.

I've always heard the 870s are very reliable, and this has really got me questioning my shotgun's reliability.

Is this a known issue? Maybe a shooter error? It happened to me and everyone else who tried the shotgun.

I pushed forward on the pump, in case that was the problem, but the problem persisted.

Oh I don't think this could be a factor, but my first 150 shells that did not have any problems were a mix of 00 Buck, Slugs, and Birdshot.

Today (Problems started) I only shot birdshot.

Sounds like an ejector issue and possibly a stuck hull that split? Did the hull look damaged at all?

If it is a new shotgun and still under warranty, I'll say contact Remington and return it to factory for servicing. Malfunctioning firearms aren't something you want to mess with unless you're a certified armorer like Aippi.

Sounds similar to what my cousin had happening with his. He asked me to take a look at it. I couldn't see any obvious problems, until I looked at his ammo. Come to find out he was running 3 1/2" shells in a 3" chamber. Low and behold, jams and locks up, cases don't clear the port when ejecting. I'm sure you checked your ammo, so make sure the barrel is what it is marked as.

Polish the chamber with steel wool. Look on YouTube for info.

I sort of did this...I used an extra fine small cylinder hone....no more issues at all...

I have the EXACT same problem.... my shotgun only has maybe.... 50 shells through it... has happened two times now... was still unable to figure out what's wrong with it, and haven't had time to deal with Remington.

It's a common issue and not terribly difficult to fix, but on a new gun, I would let Remington deal with it.

aippi has a good tutorial on his website:

Many people assume this is only an issue with the Express models but this is not true, it happened with my parkerized Police Magnum manufactured in 2010.

When it was brand new it did not like cheap target ammo and I had to mortar the shotgun to get it to eject.

After polishing the chamber I can reliably cycle any ammo.

My buddy had some extraction issues with his 870 Express and cured them by switching to the extractor from a WingMaster. I didn't think it would work but apparently it is a fairly common fix in the Remmy crowd.

Very common problem I see a lot using steel based ammunition, they don't like to extract after fired. Winchester AA and Remington Nitro and STS are the only brass based shot shells I know of any more. The brass based ammo will usually alleviate the problem but they cost more.

One of the guys I shoot with every week did this. The extraction issue is solved, now he has ejection issues
It's now going back to Remington for the second time...

ArmMe- Rio shells are brass based.

Called them, they don't cover Remington anymore sadly. They said they stopped last month.

Well looks like it's going to Remington. Will they give me a shipping label? Or do I have to pay because their shotgun is unreliable?

$800 pump shotgun and it can't even extract shells. Should've gone with a Benelli M4...
