Raahauge vs Triple B Vs ?

My boss is thinking of doing a corp event at a clays course in socal. I don't think any place in San Diego is really set up for this other than P2K, but my boss is looking for something bigger (as in a bigger venue with more stations/variety). He was telling me about some place in Vegas (Well Henderson actually) where they had golf carts and whatnot and drove from station to station (at their own pace). Didn't know where the next bird would fly from etc..

I'm not expecting a replica of that but was wondering if anyone here has any experience (Multiple visits) with these places. YSR, your input is also wanted. :-) Which would be better for a corporate event with shooters of all skill levels etc? Golf carting from one station to the next would be really cool. :-)

Also, who could I speak with at said venues?

There are different types of clay shooting sports: Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, 5-stand and manual trap.

What your boss is thinking about, is Sporting Clay. Think of it as playing golf, but you use shotguns instead of golf clubs. You will go from one station to another and shoot the "presentation" there.

One question: Are will the shooters experienced or will there be new shooters?

Funny you should ask. My friends and I are always willing to help a beginner out. Between us we've got a good selection of guns, so if you're in town or just visiting, drop me a line.

Sporting Clays in the Los Angeles area:

Say what you want about So. Cal. We’ve got restrictive gun laws, we’ve got earthquakes, we’ve got wildfires, we've got 4 Sporting Clays ranges in the Los Angeles area.

Each of them holds their monthly registered shoot on a different weekend. Each of them has something different to offer, all are fun to shoot, and all are open to the public.

Triple B Clays is located in El Monte off of the 60 near the 605. They have a 24 station flat course, in a heavily treed setting. There are 12 hunter stations and 12 tournament stations, most have A, B & C shooting position. Most of their stations have three or four machines presenting a good variety of target presentations. Their monthly registered shoot is on the first Sunday of the month. http://www.triplebclays.com and the home of this year's CA State Sporting Clays Championship June 19 - 22.

Raahauge’s is located in Corona off of the 91 between the 71 and the 15. It’s a semi-flat course set in the Prado flood plane. They keep adding new stations and new machines all the time. I think they're up to about 25 by now. Their monthly registered shoot is on the second Sunday of the month. Mike has passed away, but the range is still going strong. http://www.raahauges.com/

Moore-N-Moore is located in San Fernando off of the 210 near the 118. It’s a great course with hills and valleys in the San Gabriel Mtn foothills. They have 12 stations, 10 of them have A & B shooting positions. They really are “The friendliest range in southern California”. They hold their monthly registered shoot on the third Saturday of the month. http://www.moorenmoore.com

Oak Tree is located in Newhall off of the 5 near the 14. They have some of the most spectacular views on a sporting clays course anywhere in America. http://www.oaktreegunclub.com/ (Call before going)

Prado Olympic Shooting Park is located in Chino off of the 71 near the 91. They offer trap, skeet & 5-stand. http://www.shootprado.com/

All of these places offer public shooting so don’t wait until they hold their monthly shoots. Contact the clubs directly for more information.

If you live in Los Angeles and you can’t find a place to shoot, you’re not looking hard enough.

Here’s a link to my website. I’ve got pictures & reviews of the clubs:

I do the same thing at my current employer too, who pays for fees and ammo for my team of engineers to shoot. We try to get together and go shooting as a team building event each month. Here are some things you and your boss might want to consider:

              1. A Sporting Clay only range isn't the best choice if you will have new(er) shooters. You will have difficulty ensuring safety of the group as the environment is "open" and people are roaming all over the place with their shotguns. You will have to make sure the new shooters are safe, open the action of their guns and unload them before going to the next station etc. If you really must do this at a range that has nothing but Sporting Clay, see if it is possible to simply walk as a group and don't use the golf cart. Perhaps rent 1 or 2 to carry ammo but have the group walk together so you and other experienced folks can keep an eye on things.

If your group is very big, you will also need to split them up into different groups so that you don't create a jam at stations.

              2. Trap is easier, not just for new shooters to hit the target but also for you and your boss to control safety. Plus, you can usually reserve the entire trap field for your group.

              3. If you have out of town colleagues flying into San Diego for the shoot and are pretty new to shotguns/firearms, make sure you double check them before they leave the range for shells in their pockets. It won't be funny if they accidentally leave a shotshell in their pocket and try to board a flight back home. If they're flying out immediately after the shoot, you might also want to recommend that they have a change of clothing with them and change into clean clothing before going to the airport.

              4. Email the shooters and remind them that they should wear a hat/cap, apply sunscreen, wearing comfortable walking shoes and bring drinking water with them. And of course eye/ear protection etc.

              Good luck and have fun!

I live and work right near Raahauges, and shoot there often. You show up and go to the office where the give you a key that plugs into the machines and you have somebody hit the button when the shooter is ready. You can all hang out together, walk around the course, stop at any station you like and shoot as much as you'd like, and when you're done just turn in the key and they charge you per target shot.

It's a little more relaxed than some of the other games like trap or skeet where five shooters get up and go a full round all at one time.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

(Warning - blatant sales pitch forthcoming)

If you guys need some "experienced" hands to show you around on the sporting clay course, Brad (YSR), Cuda or myself would be more than happy to help you guys navigate the course.

                    Ok, back from dinner.

I would say Raahauge's, and I'll tell you why. First off it's closer to SD. Next it's way less crowded, and they have a lot more stations open to the general public than TBC, so you can move around more.

Also they have more stations that won't beat up new shooters. And you want to make sure everybody has fun, not just the guys that can shoot.

If you're going, depending on how many guys you're brining, you might want to call ahead and let them know.

If you're showing up with 5 to 10 guys, you can probably show up any time. If you're showing up with 20 guys or more, definitely call ahead. Keep in mind they hold tournaments all the time and you don't want to run into one.

As far as trap, skeet or sporting clays, SC is way more social due to the layout of the course.

Remember to have a safety talk before you head out to shoot.
                    • Treat every gun like it's loaded
                    • Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot
                    • Don't point the muzzle at anything you don't want to shoot.
                    • Keep the action open until you're in the box
                    • Only load two shells when you're in the box, and it's your turn to shoot
                    • Don't shoot anybody else's targets
                    • No horseplay
                    • No drinking
                    • Ear and eye protection for EVERYONE, even the people just watching

Sporting clays is fun, accidents are forever.

Try contacting the Lemon Grove Gun Club and see if their sporting clays course is available to rent.

I'd go for Prado over Raahause. Both about the same distance. Prado is cheaper with nicer people IMHO and has the cachet of having been an Olympic venue.

I would vote for Raahauges. It is a more relaxed atmosphere and IMHO more comfortable and less intimidating for beginners. If you have a large group, I would call ahead and ask for Pat.

                            ><

Call your local Sporting Clays club in or near your area. The guys have already listed some of them already

Most of them have set ups for group events which include gun rentals, shells, golf carts and instruction all in one package.

Also try your local Skeet and Trap club and ask if they have group packages available.

They all start with the basic shooting funtamentals and the instuctors will start where you will learn the basics shotgun skills, show you how to be safe, have fun and break clays.

                            Have fun out there

I am in the middle of setting up an event for my job. Ive called both Prado and Raahagues and there was a significant price difference. Raahagues was much cheaper for what we wanted. Just my .02
