Legality of birdshead grips on shotguns

So I've been playing with the idea of cutting down one of the stocks on my shotgun and making it into a birdshead grip. Before I do this I want to make sure it's legal, I know the OAL has to be greater than 26" and the barrel longer than 18" per federal law and was wondering if there were any additional restrictions at the state level. Second thing I'm worried about is the fact that PGO shotguns aren't shotguns per federal law and are DROS'd as other, would cutting down my stock violate federal law in any way? Thanks

Havent had any issues with my Mossberg 500 sporting a birdshead grip form http://shockwavetechnologies.com/site/?page_id=14

As long as your OAL is 26" with a minimum barrel length of 18" then you're good imo. I dont see any issue cutting down the factory stock, just remember OAL length is 26" with a 18" barrel. Cutting down the stock wouldn't violate any law unless your barrel lengthi is less than 18. keep your barrel at 18" and you should be gold!

I don't see where cutting down the stock would be any different then simply removing it and installing an aftermarket pistol grip.

You could design your own and cut down your wood stock or have someone do it for you. A little more involved than hitting ebay for your run of the mill plastic grip but more fun and not nearly as common as black. I have three styles of plastic grips in a drawer.

Be sure to keep it locked up while transporting in avehicle, even if in a gun case.
