Ignorance is bliss and you must be very blissful. Seriously, you're advise is laughable. PROPER FIT means a hell of a lot more than being "strong". I've seen little 12 year old girls shoot 100s of rounds of 12g in a day because, their guns fit them properly and they knew how to shoulder them properly. Obviously, you have never seen a scholastic trap program in action. Also, the smaller one is, the more they ride the recoil instead of taking it like a brick wall. But hey, I'm just a NRA Certified Shotgun Instructor while you are obviously an expert in your own mind.

Come to the SoCal clinic 4-27-14 at Triple B, and I will give you a couple of boxes of Low Recoil 2 3/4" #8, 1180fps Target shells. And the coaches will teach you how to properly mount the gun under your cheek and into the hollow in your shoulder standing straight into the target. Best $30 you ever spent.

It works very well, the recoil reduction is even more than the shooting vest, the only disadvantage is that it is slightly more difficult to put on. The advantage however, is that you can wear it under your jacket/shirt easily so that your tacticool friends won't think that you're cheating because your shoulder isn't hurting after a whole day of shooting.

        .
I just bought one of these. It is the most impossible thing to put on ever. I think I'll need to replace the strap on it. You have to somehow slip it on without the strap coming out of the cloth channel that it's in, and then somehow tighten and secure the velcro ends together under your armpit.

How can anyone put this on without a manservent or squire to help you?

I'll need to visit REI for some webbing and parachute clips!

Take the so cal shotgun clinic noted in the posting from "thefeeder" and in the stickies at the top if this forum. Not only will you have fun, bu you will learn how to ensure proper gun fit and mount. For next to nothing in cash.

All the trick stocks, recoil pads, and screwball techniques are just so much compensation for poor fit and mount. A proper fitting gun, mounted properly, with a wood stock and no recoil pad can be shot all day without pain or discomfort. Most people don't believe it because the vast majority shoot guns that don't fit and mount as they should.

Take the clinic. You'll be glad you did.
I'll be taking it with thefeeder this weekend! I did one a year or two ago, I recall the fitting issues and it makes a big difference! I also looked around the web at "shotgun fitting" and man ... you have to be quite serious about trap/skeet/clays for a custom fit gun. I have a friend who will bring his new shotgun, but it's in zombie configuration (stock but with pistol grip, short barrel, etc ... but the skeet shoot should still help him immensely with shotgun manipulation and confidence, and fitting that gun would be mostly useless if he wants to continue the sport) none of my firends have a skeet specific gun, in fact two of them don't own any guns at all! (I'm tying to get them interested, hence the invite to them to come shoot some skeet).

Did you buy it because you signed up for the Skeet Clinic? Do yourself a favor and go get yourself a shooting vest with recoil pad instead, you'll end up buying one later anyway. Clay shooting is VERY addictive.

Those pockets are worth the expense of the vest, get one that holds extra shells (they sometimes look like shells holders on side saddle, holds 2 shells around the chest area) because sometimes, when you're at the station, the shell(s) you're using can be duds and if you only had a box of 25 with you, you'll look like the idiot who ran out of ammo later on. Imagine being the one who held up the entire squad because you have to scramble back to get extra shells. Happened to me once so I now always carry at least 2 extra shells when I shoot trap.

And yes, the PAST Field Shield is a little difficult to put on if you're a pretty big fella.

Custom shotgun fitting does look a little involved(and expensive) for the casual shooter, but since you're taking TheFeeder's clinic you'll understand what can be done with some Dr. Scholl's shoe inserts, moleskin, and painters tape. It'll look ghetto, but it'll work and of course you can just get cheek risers, butt pads, and whatever else you need to fit properly and look better later, or even simply buying a different shotgun that fits you better(with a little adjustment for angle and such with shims) rather than buying the most popular thing off the shelf because it's popular to bolt crap onto.

^^ Past Field Shield ... ah, the "fat guy" issue is probably what makes mine hard to put on! I shoot rifles too, so I thought the Past shield would be handy. I bought one of those hip shell box carriers with the spent shell thingy. But it might be awkward since the shell box carrier is farther out than the spent shell bag ... sort of just cantilevered out there away from the body. (Meh, $20 from Amazon)

^^ I have a cheek pad and a "limbsaver" recoil pad that helps with LOP. I bought them for my scoped .22 for an Appleseed shoot. I couldn't get my eye up high enough for the scope otherwise. I'll bring them along for fitting.

I'm bringing my 930 JM Pro, which has shims to help adjust he stock. I won't be taking the gun apart and wasting time there, but I could certainly use them to adjust the stock once it's sorta fitted!

I really look forward to the clinic, mostly I want to see if it piques interest in my non gun owning friends and if it gets my zombie-gun friend interested and maybe I can pick up a skeet shooting buddy! (It would be nice to do something with this set of friends that isn't just drinking and complaining )
