I am thinking of picking up a benelli m4. Just wondering what you guys think, is it good for clays as well? I know benellis are good I have a nova pump. I just want to to know what other owners think.

I have an M4 and, while there are guns better suited for clay sports, an M4 will work just fine. However, it will need to be well broken-in in order for it to to shoot light loads effectively. Also, be prepared for strange looks at the range. -
Since you're located in Sunnyvale, you will have a very difficult time finding ranges that will allow the use of your Benelli M4 for clay shooting. The only range that I know of that will allow this is Metcalf Gun Range (Field Sports Park). The rest of the clay shooting ranges in the Bay Area have min. barrel length requirements and the M4 will not qualify.
If you want a Benelli semi-auto that is somewhat tactical and yet will let you shoot clays in the SF Bay Area, consider getting a Benelli M2 Field. You can deck it out with a variety of 3rd party add-ons and it comes with a variety of barrel lengths that will let you use the local clay shooting ranges.Comment

I wouldn't consider using a barrel longer than 18.5" for HD. So, if he were to consider an M2, he might want to choose the M2 Tactical, with a second, longer, barrel for clay sports. However, I prefer the Vinci Tactical - softer shooting, better drive system than the M2.Comment

I am surprised ive used my nova tactical pump which is 18.5 at los altos, they have not had any problems with me shooting it there."For every uh that Obama says a person buys a gun."

You can use it on their tin-can range, or on the rifle range if you shoot slugs. On their manual trap and E-trap range, you'll need to have 24" barrel length (if I remember it correctly).
If for some reasons you managed to shoot your 18.5" barrel shotgun in the manual trap or E-trap range, it may be that they overlooked it. You shouldn't count on being able to do this all the time though. Most of the time when I'm there, the ROs are pretty strict about it and I've seen more than 1 shooters being asked not to use their tactical shotguns there because of barrel length.Comment

Once you have the M4 you will forget you even own a Nova pump. Might as well sell it.~ El Frito

M4 is a fantastic gun and a whole lot of fun. The only downside is they don't make anything longer than an 18.5 barrel for it. Can you shoot clays with it? Sure. It's a blast. But it's not ideal and some ranges won't allow it. Not sure how important that is to you."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

BEWARE!!! Shootin clay's with a M4 can turn into a costly trigger happy endeavor! It's so quick(and fun) that I have personally wasted 100 rounds on about 15 clays!Last edited by rubbman; 08-01-2015, 4:34 PM.I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.Comment

An M4 for serious clays shooting isn't worth it, for ****s and giggles...Hell yes, I love mine for just that.
Personally I just ended up getting the M4 and another semi-auto shotgun dedicated for trap. I've shot both at Coyote Valley but eventually got caught with the M4 at the last station I was on for the day...I shouldda just wrapped it in camo as I'm sure they just don't want it because of the "tactical" image."Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."Comment
