    870 Express 20GA Misfiring

I have a new Remington Express I have put about 20 rounds thru it and today while shooting the first shot it was fine, 2nd shot click, 3rd shot click. Reload and the same thing 1st shot was fine the other two it wouldn't fire. I had a over/under 20ga using the same shells and no problems so I know it wasn't the shells

Hmm, sounds like something broke or shifted when you fired the gun. I've been hearing a lot of new 870's are having issues with parts breaking and some parts that aren't properly staked in.

Have you tried inspecting the bolt carrier and firing pin? Any marks at all on the primers denoting a light strike?

Did you clean it before you shot it? I clean all my guns prior to shooting for the first time. A good habit to have.

I haven't had a chance to inspect it yet. I cleaned it when it came out of the box and the last time I shot it about a month ago

Ok, I removed the barrel and with the action closed the bolt has a good 1/2 of movement front & back

It should have some play with the barrel removed but I'm not exactly sure how much. I'd start by visually inspecting the firing pin - it may have snapped.

              Is your magazine cap tight?

Extremely unlikely any firing pin snapped as I have yet to see that happen in 34 years of working on these guns. If there is any issue in the breech bolt it may be as simple as the guy on the line left the firing pin retracting spring out. Got a factory new P bolt that came that way. Of course that was one out of thousands but it happens. It is a long shot but take the breech bolt out, flip it upside down and look inside and make sure the firing pin is surrounded by a spring. If the firing pin retracting spring is not in place the weapon will do exactly what you report yours is doing.

Agreed, especially after only one shot, but who knows anymore with the drop in QC?

Sounds like you've got some experience working on these... listen to this dude, OP :]

It is really odd because the OP says the gun fires the 1st round, then refuses to fire subsequent shells, and this always happens. 1st shell fires, then shells 2 and 3 don't. I'm assuming shells 2 and 3 are racked in from the magazine?

OP: If you load one shell at a time by putting the shell into the ejection port directly and then sliding the handle forward, does it always fire?

Since the shotgun is new, might be better to send it back for repair. If you can narrow down the problem for Remington it might make it quicker for them to fix the issue and return the shotgun to you.

I returned the gun to Bass Pro since I just bought it late last year and they were sending it into Remington for repairs. He told me they have seen alot of 870 Express models with misfiring issues

They are full of it or don't understand the meaning of "A Lot". There are not "A lot" of 870 with misfiring issues. What is amazing are the amount of weapons returned for simple things that anyone with gun knowledge would check.

You were given two 'causes that are know to cause an issue like you were having. Did you check those?

I called Remington today and they said the gun arrived with a broken stock which they replaced and the firing pin was not hitting on the primer so they replaced it and now it's working fine. Now they need a CA compliance letter to send back to Bass Pro.........
