#4 buckshot ??

+1. I used to think about this a lot, finally came to the conclusion that I was over thinking it. Right now, I am running #4 in first two, then 00. I finally found some #1, and intend to run all #1 once I have a had chance to pattern it. I think #1 is the optimal balance of number of pellets and size of the pellets, but I would feel well armed with ANY buck shot in a 12 gauge.Pooty Poot, you sure screwed the pooch this time! - Ghost of Roza Shanina, WWII Soviet SniperComment

Mine is loaded with 00 buckshot because that was all I could find at the time. I would feel confident using either 00 or #4 to defend my home. The perp is not going to know the difference.Originally posted by G. I think the standard 2 3/4" 12 gauge shell holds 12 pellets of #1 Buck. 16 pellets would be the 3" shell. I much prefer #1 simply because of the surface area calculations, and its good penetration. I ended up getting a #1 buckshot mold because I could never find it available in stores. My second favorite is 0 buck. It fits in 12 gauge shells better than 00 buck, and performs almost identically. All that being said, I have the sidesaddle on the home defense gun loaded with four 00 shells and two #4 buck shells. I like my own loads, but I make it a policy to only use store bought ammunition for home defense. Not necessarily for legal reasons, but because I feel it is more reliable. I have had one FTF with home loads in the past two decades. But that is one more than I have had with store bought. So I will stick with it for now. If the zombies ever come, I will switch to my own loads. But until then...

Thanks, but I am good for now.
Part of the reason I got the mold was so that I could load up for the zombie apocalypse. I have several hundred rounds loaded up with #1 buck. I can suffer with the 00 shells on the HD gun for now.

It's good for when zombie coyotes attack or when hunting non-zombie yotes..Originally posted by jmonte35Disagree. Been trying to teach lewdogg21 how to hunt. It's like trying to teach Steve Wonder how to see. Not sure we're ever going to get there.Comment
