I suggest go pattern your gun at different distances. I don't think I have tried #4 buck even. Will have to search through my stock and see if i have any to try. I use 00 buck for home protection.

Ayoob I think recommends 2 rounds of #4 followed by 00 just in case you have to go through a wall or door to follow up. YMMV. Cheers.Comment

I choose OO buck only because there wasn't OOO buck. I like OOO because there are 8 pellets not 9 like in OO. Frequently OO will have what's called a "flyer".Comment

I am not aware of any LE agencies that specify #4 for duty. Study after study has demonstrated that the most effective stopper is 1B, followed by 00; #4 is considered marginal. For several years my load of choice was LE132-00, then Federal finally introduced LE132-1B, and I purchased several cases. Unfortunately, this ammo is in such great demand that it is almost impossible to find any source that currently has stock.
This study should be of interest:http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs10.htmComment

Any buck shot is going to create a rat hole at typical HD range.
If you're sending shot down an alley or clearing a warehouse or facing a riot or repelling pirates, or even hunting bucks, that's a different story, but it isn't a HD scenario.Comment

#4 buck is marginal, meaning it just barely (or doesn't quite, I don't remember) meet(s) the FBI minimum recommended penetration depth in ordinance gel, meaning it'll go through less sheetrock, insulation, glass, and fewer 2x4s than 00.Calguns.net, where everyone responding to your post is a Navy Force Delta Recon 6 Sniperator.Comment

You didn't specify, but since you apparently have a KSG 12 I'm assuming your question was regarding 12 ga. 00 buck for me there. HOWEVER in my wife's 20ga HD gun we run #4 buck.sigpic

… it depends on where you live, and how concerned you are with over penetration or what happens when you miss.
If you live in an apartment with shared walls you would probably approached the answer a lot different that someone who lives on a ranch.ExtremeXComment

Take your shotgun out and patteren it - with several different loads.
It also depends where/what type of structure you live in."The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke speech of 23 April 1770, "Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents," delivered to the House of Commons.Comment
