I like to clean my shotgun after my weekly shoot before putting it away, its a habit of mine. Thankfully, the Benelli SuperSport that I use is very easy to clean and the fact that the club where I shoot (Coyote Valley) provides a well stocked cleaning station makes things easier.
Most of the time, the choke is where I find carbon being caked on and it takes a little more effect to scrape them off.
Just for an experiment, I took a painter brush and applied some Froglube paste in the area on the choke where carbon usually accumulate and cake on (bottom part of the choke). I didn't wipe off the excess and just left the paste on the choke. I then went out and shoot 8 rounds of trap, using 8 boxes of Winchester Universal, they are some of the dirtiest shotshells you can feed into your shotgun and are sold in bulk boxes of 100 at Walmart.
I was half expecting this experiment to back fire, the Froglube paste will burn and create a biggest mess on the choke. I was pleasantly surprised to find that no caked on carbon appeared on the choke and a simple spray down with WD40 followed by paper towel was enough to clean the it.
Has anyone tried this or something similar to prevent caked on carbon on their choke?
