Clean or Lube out of the box?

I just picked up my first shotgun (Benelli Supernova). Should I do any cleaning or lubing before I go shoot it? I have with all of my other guns, but I have heard that shotguns are different and are good to go out of the box. Is this true?

    What makes them different?

It's always a good idea to clean, inspect and lube a new firearm.

I've cleaned all my new guns once picking them up, my guess is they don't get cleaned after they test fire them at the manufacturer.

I'd have a good look at it. Might find a few burrs or whatever. Clean it up, congrats!

As others said... clean n lube it before you test fire. Doesnt' hurt other than taking up a little bit of time.
Laws and common sense is all up to interpretation to us humans... and guess what? Humans suck.

Manufacturers use grease and lines designed to keep the firearm from "spoiling" on the way to market

Many degrease, inspect and then lube with what they feel is best for the firearm.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
            (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

              What they said...
Also, (being your first shotgun) ensure the proper choke is installed and tight.

You will prob find thick gobs of grease meant for preservation. Id rather clean and lube with the proper amount for cycling

                      .
Clean it, lube it, AND CHECK THE BARREL FOR OBSTRUCTIONS.

I bought a brand new Remington that had some paper in the barrel. I don't know if it was dangerous, but I'm glad I checked.

After watching WTC Bldg #7 being razed, and considering it's main occupants..

I stumbled onto this note while checking advanced weapons..
"911 = false flag. WTC 7 was brought down by demolition. 47 floors came down in 6 1/2 seconds - not hit by a plane. Just one of hundreds of absurdities that occurred that day. Wake up".

I shot the hell out of my 500 but I did break it down before shooting it. My first one as well.

I took it apart last night and it was well oiled (not greased). I still cleaned it up and re-oiled it anyway. Its so easy to break down. Can't wait to get it into the field.
