2 questions

I have two questions regarding shotguns. First off, does anybody happen to know the dimensions of the buttstock for a Benelli Super Nova w/ the tactical pistol grip?

I'm looking to get a better recoil pad, as the one that comes stock is no where near as good as the ComforTech stock on other Benelli shotguns. I'm looking to purchase a slip-on pad, but don't have the gun with me and don't know the length, width, and height of the stock.


Also, for anybody who shoots 3 1/2 inch shells, where to you normally find them? I'm looking to buy some to keep as a defensive load, but I can't seem to find any in stores, and the cheapest I've found online is about $3/shell.

If you want a slip-on just get a limb saver. They have like 3 sizes small should fit anything though

I'm looking at Limbsavers, but I want to make sure it's going to fit and not be too small, so I am wondering if anybody has the dimensions of the stock handy.

Why on earth would you want to use 3.5" shells for defensive use? Just get some standard 2 3/4" buckshot and be happy. You won't make the person any deader with 3 1/2" rounds.

I've shot 3 1/2 inch shells multiple times and have never had a problem with recoil, so why not use the strongest load I can? But I disagree. What could possibly make a man more deader than two times the number of 00 buckshot pellets hitting him? If my life is on the line, I want to use what I know will stop someone, not what's easy on some shooters' shoulders.

Because of overpenetration through multiple walls potentially injuring or killing someone that you didn't intend to.

I don't have to worry about that where I live. I'm not an idiot, I know the effects of using powerful ammunition. I want to know two things: What size recoil pad I need and where to get 3 1/2 inch shotgun shells. I don't really need peoples' opinions on what size shell I should use, I have already thought that out on my own, thanks.

And besides, I said use the strongest load I can, meaning the load that I can safely use in my area. If I wanted the most powerful gun out there, I would have a 30mm flak cannon sitting in my bedroom.

If you can get the same vel. with 3.5" as 2.75" with more buck, I can see the validity of using it as a defensive round.

I can't say for sure on a Nova or Super Nova but on my M1 Benellis you need to get a adapter plate to change pads. It seems that the aftermarket pads don't line up with the holes in the Benelli.

Brownells has the part.

As for 3.5 inch shells you might have to have your local sporting goods store order them for you. I've never seen anybody stock 3.5" in buckshot.

That was some interesting reading, but I have no idea what that has to do with recoil pads or 3 1/2 inch shells.


Randy: I am thinking of getting the slip-on style recoil pad, so I don't need one that requires any adapter plate. And as for the ammunition, I've only found one store that sells 3 1/2" shells, and that is not even in this state. But thanks for the idea

Anyway if you cannot find 3 1/2 for a reasonable price, Wal-Mart in Orange has 3 inch 00 at 15 round for $12.

Here is for Remington shotshells. Works out to a 50% increase in shot (18x00 vs 12x00) and about a 13% reduction in velocity (1125fps vs 1290fps). That is for standard hunting stuff though. No idea on their police loads. This Winchester stuff still comes out at 1200fps with 18x00 though.

I don't even know of any tactical/self defense loads in 3.5" shells. The Hornady TAP stuff comes out at 1600fps for example, but only in 2.75" loads.

To the OP, what 3.5" buckshot loads were you looking at? I don't have much problem with recoil either, but I am curious what you are looking to use. There is also the questions of how hot it is loaded and how well it patterns. Not all 00 buckshot loads are created equal, you know? It might be that 3" tactical loads would work better than 3.5" hunting loads

I'd be using the 3 1/2" shells as my defensive load. I found a box of Winchester SuperX 3 1/2" for $6 at a store in Minnesota and snatched that up, but they only had one box.

I've got other 2 3/4" and 3" loads in mind for defense as well, but to me the benefits of a 3 1/2" shell outweighs the disadvantages.
