South Cal HD Shotgun Class Recommend

I am looking for a shotgun home defense class in Southern California. I do not want to spend time on or pay to learn how to take someone into custody, to clear rooms or outdoor tactics. Nor do I wish a course that requires a handgun that I don't have.

One class I am considering is Defensive Shotgun at American Shooting Center in San Diego.

    I would welcome your suggestions.

I'm a bit confused by what you are looking for. Clearing rooms, taking into custody (possible but not likely) are the fundementals to HD. All that is left is shooting and tactical reloading. American Shooting Center is a good place. A bit overpriced though.

First rate training. All current or ex cops, most with years of SWAT background.

Thanks for the suggestions. Those look to be good places to train.

The reason I said I wasn't interested in learning to clear rooms or take someone into custody is that in my circumstances, I think clearing rooms without a partner is a fool's errand and the smart thing is to take a defensive position and call the PD. Should I ever be in a situation where I could take someone into custody, I think it best to keep a distance and await the police even though I suppose I technically am taking them into custody,if I order them to stay put, get on the ground and etcetera.

I am also not clear on the legal situation. If I can't retreat and am in imminent danger I can shoot. something like that. Shooting someone while taking them into custody may be a problem, since you are now taking an offensive role. This kind of question is one that a good class might address.

Combat loading is indeed an technique to master, as is the proper use of lighting. Who knows, I might take a basic class and decide to take an advanced course including room clearing based on what I learn in the first.

Meanwhile, it looks like I will go with a guy named TJ at All Safe Defense.

I've taken shotgun classes from ITTS, Mossie Tactics, Falcon Operations Group, and Firearms Training Associates. In my opinion, Scott Reitz at ITTS offered the best shotgun classes. As a police officer he shot and killed a suspect with a shotgun and he is also a court qualified expert in deadly force. He can explain the legalities of using deadly force and he actually knows what he is talking about, which makes him unique in the training industry.

Firearms Training Associates (FTA) teaches a class at Raahauge's in Corona that is a good basic home defense class.

You may be right, but others think differently. I don't know who is more right or more wrong, but. . .

Some feel that clearing rooms is a sucker's game for a someone working without a partner

Others have pretty well convinced me that a home owner is best off not to try to take anyone into custody

Besides shooting and tactical reloading, there are questions a myriad of issues; when to use deadly force, the use of lighting, choice of ammunition, the condition to keep a gun chambered, weapons retention should a BG reach your defensive position, and etcetera.

But more specific towards op's topic. Something to think about...Look at 49 minutes 5 seconds on the vid. It made me change my mind on a couple ways of thinking...

Good tape. He has good points about why the handgun is a much better primary HD weapon if you will be moving about. I would be the guy hunkered down waiting for the police, which is why I wouldn't try to take an intruder into custody. Still, if and when I can, I agree that it would be better to also have a handgun even if my defensive strategy doesn't plan on moving about. Plans are great, but what happens tends not to follow planning.
