Hunting license for first timer

I need to get a hunting license before Monday the 20th. There are no classes in the area I can attend in person. Any one know of any other ways I can get my license? I heard you can go to a cdfw office and take the test with them. Is this possible? Any other ideas?

Generally, NO. They have an equivelency exam at DFG you can try to take but the failure rate is 90%.

You cant,you have another option which is take the online test and do the rest follow up 4 hours only.If you pass you can purchase the license.

The Hunter Education exams are not so bad. The 4-hour class exam you take as part of the home-study path is more difficult than the test in the conventional class. From what I understand, the challenge exam is much more difficult and a higher failure rate.

I suspect that is because the people taking the challenge exam have not done all the Hunter Education course work before taking the exam. Being an experienced hunter will only take you so far on these exams.

The days of a course solely focused on Hunter Safety are long gone. That is why it is called Hunter Education. This is what fools a lot of people on these exams . . . they think of it as the old Hunter Safety classes.

I recommend Reed's in Santa Clara, ask them if you can show up as an alternate day of class, as usually 1-2 people will be no show for first class, then you are in.

I took the online class and the 4 hour in class hunter course last year.
Takes about 4-6hours to take the online portion.
100 questions on the test. You need an 80% to pass.
The majority of the test questions are derived from the online course/hunter-ed book.
About 10% covered from the in class material. Another 5-10% questions were not covered by either. Glad I passed the first time around.
It wasnt totally simple/common sense.

You must remember...Hunter Education is made for 12 year olds to pass. They want you to sit through the class (reminded me of traffic school) so you can learn something instead of just taking a test and forgetting what you learned (like what I did in college).

I took it about 10 years ago and was on the aged side of the class. I did learn a few things but was glad that I did end up taking it.

Too many people want the easy way out of things these days instead of putting in the work.

I know many people took that class when they were kids but I definitely remember the things pounded into my head as a kid than I can remember what I had for dinner 2 nights ago.

The vocabulary is the tough part of the course. For the young, many of them don't have the background when all the technical aspects of various topics are discussed. For folks where English is not their primary language, the terms and vocabulary can again be problematic. Most adults pass the Hunter Education exams.

I did the class recently. The online one you do is pretty easy, no need to study anything, you can typically figure out which are the right answers. The inperson 4 hour follow up class is a bit tougher. I believe in our class of 30, about 5 failed. You can miss up to 20 out of 100, need 80% to pass.

I thought there were about 10 hard questions and maybe 5 "iffy" ones. Its definitely NOT like the handgun safety certificate, you actually do have to know material to pass it.
