They don't make anything for my R887

So I bought a Remington 887 Nitro Mag Tactical shotgun (18")barrel. I decided to see how terribly it would perform at the trap range. It did just that, I got 11 and 8 during 2 rounds. The only way I could hit them is right out of the box. I decided I needed a longer barrel (26+),. Unfortunately they don't sell replacement barrels for the 887. So my next logical choice is a choke. I got a extra full extended turkey choke.

Have any of you used a extra full choke on a 18" barrel? How did it perform? Does anyone shoot trap with a 18" barrel? What choke size would work best?

I also love side saddles. But once again, they don't make one for the 887. So I ordered a 870 side saddle. It would have worked if the trigger assembly pins where the same size but they weren't. Then I realized that the charging handle would interfere with the side saddle if I put it where it was intended to go. I ended up riveting it to the stock.

    My honest opinion?

Look for a used Wingmaster and get a 28" or 30" barrel.

I picked up a blued 28" vent rib barrel for mine right here in the marketplace for $100 and it was in primo condition.

Reloads from the butt stock are very slow.

Another piece of advice. You're trying to make a combat shotgun fit a sporting role. Just buy a sporting shotgun for clays.
I don't think that would work either. It would still interfere with the charging handle...

This is the saddle I attached...

I would happily get a over-under. But right now a $30 choke looks better that a $1000+ gun. I am going to do everything in my power to make this one work, I was thinking of doing a little under the hood polishing to make the action smoother. If I fail then I will spend the extra dough. I like to make it challenging. Plus anyone who shoots skeet with a pump is a boss!

Will the barrel for the Nitro Mag line fit your shotgun? I see that they have 26" and 28" barrels, hopefully you can buy those and put it on your tactical shotgun.

BTW the choke will help a little, but not much if you're shooting at the 16 yard line. A couple of weeks ago, I organized a monthly company shoot and we did some trap. 2 of us had identical shotguns, Benelli SuperSport wit 28" barrel. He had the Improved Cylinder choke on his, and I have Modified choke on mine. Both works equally well.

No sure who you mean by "they". Remington offers multiple barrels for your model. The 26" is part F306881 and the 28" is part F306880. They are pricey so I would not put that kind of money into an 887

They don't make anything for my R887

Remington sent me an email this morning...

They do sell replacement barrels but not from their website. I have to call and order them. They run about $260 a piece.

The consumer services parts department can be reached at 1-800-243-9700

I am still going to see how the choke does on the 18" barrel before going after the 28". At least I know where to get one now.

I have two words for you:
              "Used shotgun"

You don't need an over/under to shoot clays, but buying the $250.00, 30 inch barreled, fixed full choke ithaca 37 that your LGS can't move off their used rack will help you improve faster.

              Charging handle?

I am not sure where you are finding $250 Ithaca 87's. But the used ones at my local shop are around $1000. Gun broker doesn't have them any cheaper either.

                Charging handle= front grip?
Not sure what it's technical name is.

I guess folks in the south bay are lucky, as they show up in the used racks here pretty regularly, along with Remington model 11s, and a few others. Granted I haven't really looked for one in the last year or so.

Fore end, slide, I've heard a few other terms. You honestly confused me with the use of 'charging handle', I thought you had a semi-auto that you thought was an 887 until I saw the pictures. I understand not everyone cares enough about shotguns to give a hoot about what the slidey thing in front of the trigger is, but this would have been in the manual that came with the gun.

Gunbroker.com auctions for Ithaca 37 12 gauge shotguns show prices from about $200.00 on up, with buy it now prices in the low to mid $300.00 dollar range and up.

Either way, my advice still stands, you'll progress faster with a more appropriate shotgun, take $250.00, figure out someway to legally procure a standard sporting shotgun.

If you don't care about how quickly you get better then take that $250.00 dollars and spend it shooting trap. At least by then you'll know if you really like trap and if you want to save up for a more spendy, more appropriate gun.

I already know I like trap.

With transfer fees and tax = $100. Even a $300 Ithaca is way more expensive than a $260 barrel, and I don't see any particular advantage to one or the other. Either way it will be next month. My fun money is used up for this month.

Turkey full choke for trap is sort of overkill.. it's going to make the gun a laser for anything inside about 35-40 yards.. For most trap shooters at the 16 yard line, Improved or Modified is all you need.. anything tighter and you better know what the gun does at distance.. Even at the 27 yard line, full choke is still pretty focused... most people overchoke and wonder why they are missing..

Remington does not sell anything from a web site. The Country Store is run by a Contract Vendor and sells commonly ordered small parts, over runs, discontinued items and other mess. To purchase from Remington anyone can call 800-243-9700 and follow the prompts to parts and order from the parts list. You can down load the parts list by going to www.remington.com, put your curser on "support" then select the "Part Information" from the drop down box. When that page comes up down load the parts list in PDF. You then tell the rep the part number and they will take your payment info. You will also find that the parts list has parts cheaper then you are paying at Brownells and Midway.

I have a 37, and it's one of my favorite trap guns. I picked up an old Stevens by Browning off of here for 200. 16 gauge. Since I have a cabela's card I get points to use in the store. Got a case of herter's 6 shot for 75 delivered.
