Just bought an 870 Express with 28" barrel, in black synthetic - $350. Buying for the same reason - trap only...pick her up a week from today

      Good luck!

Oh, I already own an 870 Express tactical Magpul Edition w/18.5" barrel - HD gun

Gunbroker flagged my account for some reason so I missed that one but I've got my eye on several others. Hopefully customer service can sort me out in time.

When a listing says that the gun comes with a full choke in the barrel, are they saying that it has the remington full choke or that is has a "normal" full choke?
From what I've heard, remington full chokes are designed to be used with typical slugs, but if you try to shoot a slug through a full choke it will damage the choke and/or barrel.

The slugs I have in mind are the typical 12ga 1oz rifled slugs, should I be looking at unrifled slugs instead?

Edit: And modified chokes are fine for slugs, right?

Slugs should be fired from an open / cylinder bore choke.

Some shotgun barrels have interchangeable chokes, some don't.
Interchangeable chokes are tubes that screw into the front of the barrel, each has a different inside diameter.

A "fixed" choke is one that is made as part of the barrel.
To change the choke you have to change the barrel.

Something like the Mossberg Combo 2-barrel set has a 18.5" barrel that is cylinder bore for use with slugs or home defense with buckshot at close range, and a 28" barrel that is usually choked medium.

You can find similar sets for the 870, with or without fixed chokes.

Or, just buy one of those 18" 870s and get another barrel for it.

This is an interchangeable choke, correct? I might just buy a cylinder bore choke and swap the chokes out depending on whether i'm shooting slugs or shot.

Heard the finishes on the Express models are pretty bad nowadays.

Winchesters are the smoothest, mossbergs a combination of smoother with a bit more toughness, remingtons are mostly garbage these days. the older ones are great, but quality control has been sliding. bang-for-the-buck you can't lose with a Mossberg. I had one for years but sold it to get a Winchester 1300 after I tried one. they are buttery-smooth and cycle very quickly.

I tried some out in the shop and was a bit put off by the "Mossberg rattle"

I'm definately open to a Winchester if I see a nice one competitively priced.

The 870 marine model is a sexy gun(second to my m4)!
I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.
