    Remington 870 stock suggestion

Hey guys, I try to be a keep it simple kind of guy, and I have never owned a shotgun before, I ended up getting a Remington 870 for home defense on sale during Black Friday online and just got in possession of it, and I came to a really troubling realization. The length of pull is designed for someone much bigger than myself. I am about 5'1 and my measured length of pull is just barely shy of 11".

I was thinking of calling Remington to see if they would let me swap for a youth or something, but from what stores have been telling me, there's no chance of that. So now I'm probably going to have to sell my stock one and try to find a replacement one that goes down to the length I need. I was wondering if anyone might have suggestions what affordable options I might have. From googling the ones one I have found that might fit my needs is the magpul (which is pretty pricey) and the UAG (made by phoenix?) stocks. I appreciate any advice on what to do, I'm not trying to tacticool it, no scopes, just something for HD and maybe occasional plinking, just trying to keep it practical and affordable.

    I like the 12" Hogue.

I think I paid $40 for mine right here in the marketplace, it was brand new.

You never said if your stock is a wooden stock...if you wanted to go cheap, you could trim it...just thinking out loud.

I'm 5'2" but wide...and I had a problem with the M16A2s with a vest on for several reasons, but I think one of them was my LOP was short...never measured it, but my 870 shoulders perfectly for me...oh well, I feel your pain.

I remember that taking off my pad was a PITA even when someone told me the correct screwdriver size, but I don't remember why I took it off. Trimmed it?? Good luck.

Sorry, I should have clarified, I have a remington 870 express, with the synthetic stock, so not sure shortening it is an option.

Thank you guys for the recommendations. I like the Magpul, but its a bit pricey, which is why I looked at the UAG. I'll definitely look for a hogue if I can find it on the cheap.

You could buy a Remington youth stock. For my money, I'd pony up and buy the Spec Ops.

The magpul stock is worth the money. My wife is 5'1" and I shortened the stock to make it easier for her to handle. I can adjust at the stock length I have it set at but wanted it comfortable for her to handle since she brings it out when I'm at work late.

I got an extra magpul forend as a christmas gift I have for sale if you're interested down the line also. I already had the sga stock and the forend for my 870 express before I even brought it home. Id REALLY recommend you taking the 870 out to shoot before leaving it out for HD purpose. My express would jam making it difficult to rack the next round after shooting it out of the box the first time out. Took almost 100 rounds before it started racking easier. I swapped out a few internal pieces to make it more reliable after reading some of the problems express models had. Cleaned up the inside of the barrel by putting a piece of steel wool over the cleaning brush, and then using my drill to run that for a few minutes right inside the barrel where the rounds go into.

Next time out to the range after that and a good cleaning and it functioned flawlessly.

This is the link I read and got the internal inexpensive pieces to upgrade on the express model from brownells. Spring, non mim extractor, follower, safety....

Thanks mate, I'll be sure to take my shotgun to the range and try it out, maybe after I get a shorter stock, right now its about 1-2 inches to long for me to comfortably hold.

I'm reading about the failure to extracts and jamming and I hope it doesn't plague this 870 as I just got it, as it looks like the problem goes back awhile.

I am concerned if Remington is making a shoddy shotgun requiring us to upgrade basic part it in order for the firearm to properly function. It seems like a generally crappy way to run a company. I should have gotten a Mossberg had I known I had to spend more money to upgrade basic parts for it to function

Hopefully yours doesn't have the issues you've found. I have the cheapest Mossberg (Maverick 88) but I have heard good things about the Remington 870s. I'm sure it will work out.

The 870 is a great shotgun. Just have to break it in. Believe me, you'll love it once you get some rounds through it. Before taking it out, take it apart and clean it really good. Polish the inside of the barrel like I said and you shouldn't have any problems, theres a video online that tells you how to change the extractor and polish the barrel. Really easy to do.

Remington is not making a shoddy shotgun and no parts are required to function properly. You are confusing the fact that some guys want to upgrade two parts that come in the 870 Police not express or other models. That is their preference and those parts are in the P model mainly for marketing reasons. There are a lot of Departments using the 870 Express HD for duty guns with no upgrades and I would also with hesitation.

You knew your length of pull was around 11" to 12" and bought a model with a 14" LOP and are now complaining about it. The issue is yours, not the weapons. Also, you got some information somewhere from someone who has no idea about these weapons, accepted it as fact and making a negative comment about a fine product. Very close minded and unfair to the makers of that model. So yes, please sell it and go get a Mossberg.

In fact, I have some 590A1s coming in on trade from a PD that is purchasing my Custom 870's and I will very happy to sell you one.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

My vote goes to the Hogue stock & forend. I have one on my 870 (likely same model) because it was too long for me as well. The forend is textured and grips very well. The buttstock is comfortable, perfect length and handles recoil very well.

3rd vote for Hogue kit 12in LOP, according to your criteria.

Another shotgun forum did a pic comparison of Hogue and Magpul and my experience of both was the same... Hogue is a hair shorter and Magpul a hair longer of the 12in marker. The Hogue forend will be enjoyable to shoot with.
