What is a Sabot Slug?

Someone enlighten me please. What is a Sabot slug?

I believe is known as submunition. A smaller caliber than your regular projectile in artillery.
Ready to be corrected because I have never seen this in light weapons.

A sabot slug is a bullet held in a formed cup.The cup is bore sized and the bullet or slug is held in the cup by the shotshell hull. This allows for a somewhat lighter bullet/slug at higher velocity with better downrange ballistics and improved accuracy, particularly in a rifled slug barrel. And since the lead doesn't touch the inside of the barrel, there's no leading.

Sabots are also used extensively in muzzle loaders.

It's alot more money than a rifled slug. I think you need a rifled barrel to take advantage of it. Other wise it doesn't have any way to stabilize.

and 308 if im not mistaken. they called them "accelerator". wonderful ammo. takes the 55 grain 223 bullet up to 4080 feet per second. makes a vicious mess of water jugs. i once shot a 1/4 inch group at 50 yards with them out of my old remington 721 chambered in 30-06. they are as accurate as the rifle they are fired from, no worse, no better. ive heard of people getting 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with them.

the original accelerators were collectable a few years ago, selling for 5 bucks a cartridge or more( i saw 6.50 once on one of the auction sites, people were buying them).

i have one full box and one partial( im dumb, i bring em out to show new shooters how fun they are and sometimes let em vaporize a gallon of water with one). i dont think they are worth as much nowdays since remington started making them again.

back to original question. sabot is just a covering that falls away after firing. a "shell" that sheds away. in small stuff its a cup with petals. in large stuff its multiple pieces(like in a tanks main gun)
