FNH SLP Mk 1 pros and cons?

I am considering acquiring an FN SLP MK 1 before the end of the year. Pricey shotgun but getting it for over $500 less then a Benelli M4. Anyone have one or experience with one just wondering if they are truly worth the money versus the old standard reliable pump models? This would just be to add to my existing SHTF inventory primarily for basic range shooting and desert plinkiing. Not for 3 gun or other competition shooting.

My SLP Mk 1 is a beast and I've shot the piss out of it. However, I've heard of issues with the current run of Mk 1s, after they changed to the unified piston. It seems to be causing issues running the WalMart bulk packs. My older Mk 1 runs them just fine using the light piston. Other folks are saying that you have to get the Browning Gold piston to replace the current piston to have it cycle the bulk packs.

Yes, I have read some stuff about the lack of reliability shooting the cheaper target loads. It even said something about the FN instruction manual specifying certain minimum ammo specs to ensure reliable operation.

My friend has one and we take turns shooting clays using the walmart bulk packs. I would occasionally get a misfeed while my friend would run 100% during same session.
Maybe it's the way I held the shotgun for the followup shot, found it odd. Using slugs/buckshot, not an issue.

Yes, it's the bronze one now. Supposedly, it's the 'improved design' but there are reports of issues with it. Hence, the folks buying the Browning piston to correct it. The original had 2 pistons, light and heavy, and I've never had to use the heavy.

I have had my SLP for 3+ years now, and 1000's of rounds through it No real issues to speak of. I had both light and heavy pistons sealed by http://www.surecycle.com/ there will never be a load too light for this shotgun.

The SLP is a fine shotgun. So is the M4...and the M2 for that matter. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these guns.

The question of, "Which one is better," is highly subjective. As is the question of whether the M4 is worth the extra $$ over the SLP. Of course the $500 savings on the SLP is meaningless if what you really want is a M4.

And as to whether a semi auto is worth the extra $$ over a pump...you guessed it...completely subjective. Given the choice in a home defense role, I'd take a high quality semi auto over a pump gun any day. But that's me. Many people feel differently.
