Big5 Mossberg question

Hi, I'm new here and needing some search help.
Any help with links or info appreciated.

I saw/heard about a change in purchasing after the first of the year, but not sure how to find it or what the changes are?

I am looking at one of the Mossberg's at Big5, the 2 barrel and the tactical. It seems like the 2 barrel is overall a better deal unless I want a bigger magazine?
What am I missing?

Registration of long guns will start the first of this year.

I think you meant 'security' model instead of 'tactical' model.
The security model comes with 8+1 shot which you will probably use more than the barrel swapping of the combo.

I would not get the combo. I don't think you can go hunting with the 28" barrel because your magazine capacity is too much at 5+1 (someone may confirm this or correct me on game allowed or something).

I prefer a longer magazine tube because i use my 500 for home defense....if u are going to do the same i would suggest the longer mag tube shotgun...if u are going skeetor trap shootin go for the two barrel option....get it before the first to avoid registration...

Having said that the Big5 Mossberg combo is one of the best deals you're likely to find on a new pump shotgun.

But... that's not without a catch..
IIRC the 28" field barrel has a fixed modified choke, and the 18 or 20" HD barrel is cylinder.

Also a few reports recently about "cheap" forends breaking.


So.... if you're looking for a functional shotgun for both HD and breaking clays/hunting (doves? *shrug* what do people hunt?) the mossy combo will do the job but don't expect it to have all the bells/whistles.

out. I bought one of their Maverick ( Mossberg ) for $180. Pretty good deal

The combo comes with a dowel installed for 2 in mag +1. The dowel is removable. YouTube is your friend. The 28" barrel is fine for casual clay breaking. The 18 " with 5 +1 is adequate for HD. I've enjoyed my for many years.

I bought a 795 last week at B5 and the manager was laughing that Upper management had sent out no info on the new yesr changes yet.

Probably just recording the serial number as that don't currently do on long guns.

Registration of the firearm with the State of California Department of Justice. Registration means they will record in a database, the serial number and make/model of that firearm and the address stated when purchasing.

We do not register long guns right now. Starting Jan 1st we will have to.

Post Jan 1 long guns will be treated the way handguns are now (for specifics check the 2a forum). And yes buying from big 5 is very dependent on your sales person. Expect a bit longer of a process and you have to wait 11 days so the guy who sells shoes normally can still handle giving you your gun. Corporate CYA policy.

As far as the Big 5 Mossbergs, they are 100% good to go. I have been shooting mine for 12 years for clays ducks and upland birds and home defense. Though I have others too. They do use the Maverick forend (though even LGS models are starting to include pinned forends on field models) and the fixed choke barrel to make the Big 5 price point.

As far as model your first question is, will you ever shoot clays and/or hunt with it?

If the answer is no get the 8 shot. More capacity for bad guys, if you do ever want to get the field barrel, they do make one for the 8 shot but its on the Maverick page (they will fit the Mossberg) but its a bit of a pain to get one, this way you don't have to change your magtube (despite what 99% of people think).

If the answer is yes get the 5 shot combo. 5 shots should be enough for real world bad stuff and you should take a class for that anyway. The gun will come with a small dowel inside the gun to block to 2 in the tube which is( oversimplified) needed for hunting anything in CA. Mod is a good starter choke IMO.Yes the fixed modified choke has some limitations down the road but I hunted and broke clays for a long time with it. Mossberg does not recommend steel shot through a fixed choke but I PERSONALLY, had no problems with extended shooting of 3" #3 duck loads over the years. YMMV. Trap and even skeet are doable but sporting clays would require an upgrade to stay competitive. That is probably down the line for you though. You will not go wrong with a Mossberg.

TL;DR. Big 5 is fine, just slower. Only shoot badguys, get the 8 shot. Ever gonna clays or hunt, get the combo.

Cant beat the Moss 500 with both barrels for a basic 12g. Love mine...price was great at $269 a few years back

I got the Mossy combo from big5 last year and I love it. Mine came with threaded choke tubes on the 28" barrel though. Are they only coming with a fixed choke now? I was thinking about picking up another before the end of the year but that may be a deal breaker.

This is true of the "blued" model. The 28" barrel of the camo version of the same gun comes with 4 chokes and a ported barrel. An excellent gun not just for the sale price, but well built as well...

Mossberg 500 is a sweet shotgun. Very dependable, fun to shoot. With the interchangeable barrels, gives one more options.
