    Replacing your pumps forend?

When I ordered my Blackhawk Specops stock a few years ago, I did not know that I had to have a special wrench to remove the nut that retains the forend. I also ordered a Hogue forend as well. No tool I had could work without marring something. After looking up how to replace a forend, I then knew about this special wrench! I should have looked that up first! No local gun shop had one. Was I now forced to wait upon ordering this thing? No! I went to my local hardware store/ gun shop (isn't that cool?) looked around for some rigid tubing that I could make a wrench out of. I found a copper coupling 1 1/4 inches in diameter and went to cutting with my B&D dremel type tool. Here it is.

Very creative, you did a nice job. Now check out a Remington factory schematic and take a close look at the slide assembly, (part number 57). It is the perfect size to use to unscrew the castle nut in the forearm, use the rounded side down. All 870’s have a built in tool.

Now as much as I would like to take credit for this bit of shotgun wisdom , I must in all honesty give credit where credit is due. AI&P Tactical posted this information here on calguns a long time ago.

I highly recommend using the needle nose pliers and any method found on u tube and other sites as this leads to increased sales for the new forend tube assemblies and tube nuts I sell.

Once at my LGS shooting the breeze, the owner said some years ago the gunsmith told him that they should give away dremel tools! I had to try your idea and here are the pics. By jingy, it works!

                DONNRCP:

You should feel quilty posting pictures of a gun in that condition. I do expect to see follow up pictures of the gun properly cleaned and oiled.

But you're using the wrong end of the slide. The other ends fits the forend tube nut perfectly.

Nice, good to know. I had always used a pair of needle nose pliers, had no clue I had a built in tool.

                          That's what I used once.

On a side note, I wish there was good write ups how to remove/install a forend for a 590a1. Youtube vids are all pretty useless/crappy, I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to remove it. I have a magpul sitting here for 2 weeks waiting to go on.

I broke down and bought one of those damn $10 tools on eBay which look like it can easily be made with an 1/8" steel plate. Makes life so much easier though, especially with the hole in it allowing you to insert a rod/punch for leverage. I think it works for Remingtons and Mossbergs.

hate to be a downer but by the time you're done driving around, buying little things and spending a bunch of time making a tool, you could've bought one and ebay for like 8 bucks. how much does gas cost?
