What's a good price for a new Mossberg 590A1 and how does it compare to the Remington 870 Tactical? Which would you get?

nevermind. found some info already. -
590a1 and 870 express are 2 different shotguns. Ask the same question but replace it with the 870 police. As you stated it, the 590a1 all the way. Paid like $590 + dros for mine and it was great.Comment

Two different class of guns. 590a1 any day of the week if I had a choice. Better safety position for us lefties too.Comment

I did get the 590... they're both great shotguns from everything I've read.
I picked the 590 simply because the controls felt better, tang safety and the action release felt much more intuitive to me on the 590.
The 870 does have a wider spread of aftermarket options... however when you start looking into it deeper.. moss 835 barrels will give you choke options.. and most 500 forends/stocks fit the 590 with little/no modification.
Also keep in mind if you don't mind the polymer safety, and trigger group housing with standard thickness barrels... you can get the 590(non a-1) and save some money. Big5 had 'em last year on sale around xmas so they might have something going on this year as well.Central Coast Chapter Meetups http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=493387

No info from me on the Rem-870.
But I did just put a 590A1 20" USS in Jail 15 minutes ago. Paid $573 OTD.
This was another selling point for me as well.sigpicOriginally posted by -hanko"They who can give up basic intelligence to obtain what they think are large cojones, deserve neither intelligence nor large cojones".

I have a 590A1 and a Police 870 Magnum. I used to have an 18" Express.
The 590A1 is a no-nonsense shotgun, could be described as ugly, but could not in any sense of the word be mistaken for a hunting shotgun. My 20-inch heavy-barrel model has a magazine capacity that makes Bloomberg nervous, and a bayonet lug that offends everybody. The parkerizing is good, the finish on the aluminum receiver is good but scratches, though you definitely shouldn't expect this thing to look mint. Field stripping is easy but detail stripping is more difficult than the 870. The controls, including the safety and action release, seem more natural than the 870. But the safety on the 870 seems like it would give you less problems than the Mossberg's.
I like how the lifter stays up so you can load shells easier.
My 870 Police is more of a looker of a shotgun. It is fully parkerized with walnut wood as a stock. Its safety is behind the trigger guard, which I don't mind, and the action release is in front of, which I think is inferior to the placement of the Mossberg but how often do you need to actuate it with your finger near the trigger? It doesn't stop the 870 from being the most popular shotgun out there, for sure.
There are more aftermarket accessories for the 870.
The receiver is steel on the Remington. Does this matter? Well, probably not but it's cheaper to refinish and a lot more difficult to damage due to negligence. It also gives the gun more balance compared to the 590A1 which can be front heavy with the thick-*** barrel. The 870 is easier to detail strip.
I enjoy my 870 Police a lot more than my Express; the wood is nicer, the internals look better finished. I never had a problem with the Express, but some people claim the newer Express models have rough chambers. The finish on the 870 Police and the 590A1 is a lot more durable than the Express' finish, and I suspect the Tactical wears the same finish.
My Police has a polymer trigger guard, which is plenty durable. The 590A1 has a metal one, which is apparently an upgrade over the plastic Mossberg 500/590 guard. The polymer one may be stronger in this application, though I appreciate the metal safety on the 590A1 compared to a plastic one.
