    Thinking about a 2nd shotgun before 12/31 - should I?

I already have a Mossberg 590 12 gauge and really like it but even so, am considering buying a second one. Not sure I can bring myself to spend the money on a duplicate, but the new laws on long gun registration have me thinking about picking a second this month.

I don't *need" two shotguns, just one. But if God forbid I ever had to use it in a home defense scenario, it would become evidence and I'd have none, at least for awhile. Then again, this has never happened to me before, or to anyone I know.

Is buying a second shotgun foolish and impulsive? Or prudent and forward-thinking?

Thanks for any thoughts/opinions on this subject...
My ignore list is so big that sometimes, I will click on a thread and there's literally nothing there.

Depends what the use is? I'm assuming the 590 is a 18" and it's use is for HD or similar. When you say duplicate I'm not sure if your talking about getting a clone of what you own? If your going to go for a second, buy something functional your going to use like a SG with a 28" barrel that can double for trap and hunting. Just my thought.

I think it is wise to have multiples of a firearm platform for many reasons. Shotguns are great choices due to their value and versatility, not to mention that they are devastatingly effective tools. If you like the Mossberg, look at a Mossberg Flex model or a semi in 12 ga; the same but different..

        One is none.

        So, yes.

Agreed on the second one if you can afford it and definitely would go after a nice hunter or something different from what you have. I'm not going to get my second one before the registration but I really don't care as they are all in a database anyways. I never told Ruger I bought my all American but some how they sent me a thank you cheek rest for free to my house.....

2 pistols in the same caliber and 2 shotguns in the same gauge just makes sense to me. I'll probably end up with 3 shotguns for different purposes. They are just fun to shoot.

I had to laugh when I saw that you don't "need" another shotgun. It's obvious that you WANT another one....and don't think of it as an unnecessary expense, think of it as a wise INVESTMENT.

I'd suggest that you look into a quality shotgun that is versatile, such as the Remington 870. LOTS of after-market parts available to convert it to hunting/trap shooting, or "tactical". Your Mossberg 590 isn't quite as convertible as a Remington 870.

Do you remember the LA riots? Hurricane Katrina? Other occasions where folks who thought they didn't need a gun, suddenly came to believe they needed one?

And all the gun stores were closed. Or had "waiting periods". As if the mob on one's doorstep would be inclined to "wait".

Now imagine the week or month before one of those types of events, your Mossberg breaks or goes missing (such as stolen out of your vehicle while taking a leak in a gas station bathroom coming home from a range trip).

Two is one, one is none.

I have three 12 gauge shotguns and am acquiring a fourth this week. I have the Mossberg 590 like you do, but I like diversity and redundancy. I don't disagree with your impulse to acquire an exact copy, there are benefits in doing that (parts and accessory interchangeability). The new one I am acquiring is just about opposite of my M590 which is my primary HD long-arm. The Mossberg, with 20" barrel, heat shield, mounted light, side saddle... it's a battle tank and I like the heft. The new one is a Winchester SXP (successor to the 1200 & 1300 line) and is light, nimble and quick, and I intend to keep it that way. The Mossberg has a long buttstock length, which suits me fine... but the wife can't shoulder it properly. She shouldn't have that issue with the Winchester SXP.

If you have the opportunity and the inclination, it's probably better to get it off-registration while you can... who knows, someday you may look back on that as a good decision.

I recently got my second 12 gauge. A Mossberg 930 SPX (used), that I feed factory ammo for HD. Should a situation occur that factory ammo is scarce, my 870 can work with any of my reloads where the 930 on occasion does not.

Before moving on topic... let me just point out that from what I've read on mossbergowners and shotgunworld the 590 should take any 500 stock/adapter.

It can use a large variety of 500 based forends with some tweaks for the second action bar that's lacking in many 500/maverick models.

Additionally, if you have a 590 5+1 config you should be able to use any 835 barrel (although 3.5" shells on the 590 with an 835 barrel are a no-go.. ejection port isn't big enough or the bolt doesn't open far enough to load or something.. still never got a clear picture of why not.)

500/590 rails use the same configuration for receiver mounted rails.

Most mounted saddles (Mesa tactical) work on both the 500/590 since the receiver pin placement is dimensionally similar (actually from what I've read the receivers are almost identical, just the 590 supports the second action bar on all models.. whereas the 500 only has it on specific configurations. (I *think * there was one other "large" difference in the receivers.. but for the moment it escapes me.)

Having said that.. swapping out the mag tube to a 500 mag tube opens up a world of possibilities for 500 barrels.

Or... if you keep the 590 tube just get a +X extension for a 930 and up your capacity.

So ya there's still plenty of customization options for a 590... but IT ADDS UP FAST.

                  So getting on topic...
Get yourself a 930 to go with your 590.

If you want one then yes. But if you are buying because of the new law and spending money on something you stated you don't need, then that seems an over reaction. Like Sarge said, they are all on paper already. Every gun including long guns are tracked by being logged into our dealer books. In many states that trail ends with the first legal buyer as in many states private parties can sell long guns to anyone with no paper trail. In your state that is not the case so any gun you have can be tracked any way. So the new law means little to nothing, at least that is my understanding. Buying one later will not be an issue.

As a dealer, every personal gun I have is in in my private gun book and that is just not an issue for me as they are all legal and I have no intentions of doing anything illegal with them. My hand guns are all in a file at the local SO and the MI state Police and I have no issue with that. No one is coming to take them unless I do something illegal and I will accept the fact that I forfit my gun rights if I decide to do that. I don't fear the ATF or the Black Helicopters and all the other mess out there on the internet. I am a legal gun onwer doing legal things with my legal guns.

You are more likely to crash your car and not have one then have a gun taken because you used it. And the chance you will need one for self defense in a short period of time is bout the same as being struck by lightening twice in the same period. But heck yea, if you feel better having two go for it. I have more then one , way more.

Shotguns are not just for HD, there are many other applications for a shotgun for sporting purposes. Don't just limit yourself to just the one you have for your specific task of HD. Have at least another like a Mossberg 500 combo.

Get another shotgun, 20 gauge. That's what I'm planning to do soon. When I go to Walmart to buy bridshots for clay shooting, it always seems to me that nobody buys the 20 gauge ammo and they just pile up on the shelve waiting for me to shoot them.

I'm taking a day off next week to drive down to Weatherby's office in Paso Robles to try out their SA-08 Synthetic Youth model for my wife. I don't mind getting one for myself either.
