I just acquired a 1957 20ga remington wingmaster standard (12ga reciever with 20ga barrel). These were made from 1950-1972. I am either looking for another barrel or information on making it a 12ga. What parts other than barrel would I need to make it a 12ga? Any source for a 20ga standard barrel? Thanks

I have the same gun and had looked for a barrel with a different choke when I first got it. A good place for barrels is www barrelexchange.com, and it probably your best bet to find what you're looking for.
I don't know, but have wondered, if the 12ga barrel from that vintage would fit the 12ga frame of the 20ga Wingmaster.
The folks at barrelexchange can answer all your questions, including the interchangeability.
Good luck. Great gun regardless if gauge. -
I may be mistaken, but the 20 gauge receivers are, overall, smaller than the 12 gauge receivers. As such, there will be no changing it's gauge. Not to mention, the amount of time and money you'd be spending to change it from 20 to 12 is likely prohibitive as well, since you'd be able to buy a new 12 gauge with that much cash. That's if it was possible in the first place, which I don't think it is.I just acquired a 1957 20ga remington wingmaster standard (12ga reciever with 20ga barrel). These were made from 1950-1972. Enjoy it for what it is, a classic, well built, nice handling, 20 gauge shotgun.Calguns.net, where everyone responding to your post is a Navy Force Delta Recon 6 Sniperator.Comment

Yes, you are mistaken. The older 20ga are built on 12ga receivers, which is the point of his post. So yes, 12ga barrels fit. You may then simply have to replace the mag tube which unfortunately is a Remington Authorized Repair Center (RARC) part but you can send it one of them or to the factory and have that done. Not sure what else needs replacing if anything. I have not seen one of these shotguns in about 30+ years so just don't remmeber. I just had a customer buy a barrel who is doing this but did not have time to ask him about it. So when the OP called and asked about 20ga barrels I sugested he post the question here.I may be mistaken, but the 20 gauge receivers are, overall, smaller than the 12 gauge receivers. As for what something cost doing is relevent only to the person doing it. Some like the idea of doing something as opposed to buying off the rack. They take pride in a job well done, and "that" you can not put a price on.Last edited by aippi; 12-07-2013, 2:59 PM.JD McGuire, Owner

The early 20ga guns were made on a 12ga receiver with a smaller boltface and a magazine tube. The later/current 20ga Remingtons are made on their own smaller receiverI may be mistaken, but the 20 gauge receivers are, overall, smaller than the 12 gauge receivers.
