Did you have to trim a little bit off the forend so that it would clear the side saddle?

Also....for the people with 590's...do you guys have the 51663 or 50663 model? Does the extra $30 (based on Buds Gun Shop prices) make a difference by having the metal safety/trigger guard and a heavier barrel?

I have the 51663 with metal trigger guard, metal safety and thicker barrel. The plastic safeties are notorious for breaking. Cavalry Arms makes a good looking 'extended safety' (m#SST590) and sells for about $40. It has a thicker barrel so if you DO decide to put a bayonet on there, it should take the abuse. Also, I think only the 51663 has the roll mark that says M590A1. Those three items, IMO, are worth at least $30. YMMV.

Not the forend. I need it so I can put an EOTech on top of the receiver. None of the Mesa Tactical rails look like they can be installed without the ghost ring rear sight being removed. Does anyone make one that will go forward of the ghost ring sight, or does the rear sight occupy the tapped holes for the rail?

Is it possible to use the Surefire lighted forend, or will the bayonet lug get in the way?

My XD rusts more than my 590. 590 has not a spec of rust on it.

This is my first firearm. That's about the only reason I could think of

You cannot use the new units (623FA or 623FGA) if you want to keep the bayo, you would need to find the older style 623A01. Let me know if you find one and I'll buy it off of you.

negative on the forend trimming. my 590 (SP not A1) came with the tactical 'short' forend so no modification was required. supposedly the new version mesa tactical shell holders require NO modification to the factory forend on the remington/mossberg.

as far as the 590 Vs A1 debate; the basic differences are the metal safety and trigger guard, and the heavy barrel with stamped receiver. now in my line of use, i cant find any practicality in any of those upgrades, except a metal safety. but if you are a hunter, or perhaps going into combat, or if you just want to use your shotgun as a baseball bat, then maybe a 590 a1 would be better for you. its basically designed to be just a little bit rougher than the SP.

if you are in an urbanized setting then you probably wont miss those features.
