    Must Haves for HD shotgun

About to pick up a 870 in a few days

I know I'll need a light (surefire forend)
    side saddle (mesa tactical)

    is that it?

or do I need a sling? I've read many arguments against slings for HD

also other internal parts I should swap out and upgrade?

    input appreciated

Im upgrading my new 870 for the same reasons as you. Just ordered a new non MIM extractor, Carrier latch sprimg, SS follower, and a vang big safety. Got a surefire scout light on the way. Already put the magpul sga stock, single point attachment, and magpul forend on it last week after I got my shotgun.

Put 100 rounds in it at the range first time out and cleaned it. Taking it out for another 100 this week. I won't feel comfortable using it for home defense after at least 300 rounds and broken in good. Also taking a shotgun course later this month.

Best thing I did to my 870 was my adjustable stock with pistol grip. 1st one was was a ATI then I got a Knoxx SpecOps Recoil Reducing best upgrade. It is a shot gun keep it simple... I kept the stander grip on the pump.

I can't do pistol grip stocks
The angle on the wrist just feels weird

              Im not into PG stocks

I do not know. If you can pick one up no tax and free shipping, that will be like getting it for 10 to 15% off retail store.

                      sweet
I think I'll start with a light and a mesa tactical side saddle

now for internal components, I had an 870 express tactical (ghost ring sights and tacticool breaching choke) go down on me at the range... running bird shots

broken ejector... so I really want this one to operate with no failure

I have a sling on mine. Bumps in the night come in all shapes and sizes, sometimes your water heater blows up and all you know is that you heard a bang but it doesn't sound like anyone is in your home. Hunkering down in your bedroom calling the cops while aiming a shotgun at the door seems like overkill when what you really want is a little peace of mind while figuring out what made the banging sound. At that point, it's nice to be able to sling the shotgun (so it stays with me) leave both hands free to gesture wildly as I cuss at Murhpy's Law and old water heaters. Likewise, sometimes you want to take a shotgun outside because you think a pack of coyotes might be trying to kill your dog, it's nice at that point to be able to sling the shotgun so your an use both hands to gesture wildly at a fleeing pack of coyotes while comforting your OK dog, or otherwise attend to your injured dog if things went south.
