New 870 Express Tactical Magpul Owner

Not my first gun by a long shot, but new to the family. (http://www.remington.com/products/fi...al-magpul.aspx) I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this model, specifically im used to a tube with an 8 shell capacity, and notice that the tube on this is already almost flush with the front end. Is there a tube extension that will work on this weapon? I ask because it looks like there is a barrel clamp permanently attached to the barrel and this does not seem to be commonplace with other 870s.

Also how to you feel about the fore end grip from magpul? Too slippery as I have heard some say and thus either suggest something like an angled fore grip or replacing the fore end with a surefire weapon light fore grip. (I will be adding a light in either case)

If there are any other suggestions I am all ears as well. I already plan to add a sidesaddle and larger safety switch.

That "clamp" you're referring to is the barrel ring.

On that particular model it was moved forward, which means you can't buy a different barrel and swap it out like you can with any other 870 model.

You should have gotten this one instead.

Note how the mag tube and barrel is attached in the middle of the barrel vs. at the end of the barrel. On this one you can change mag tubes for more capacity.

Anyone know why Remington makes the 870 in these two different ways and yet still call it the same? Kind of confusing for the average guy who normally wouldn't know what to look for.

I was thinking the same thing when I was researching on picking up the magpul and not magpul version.

Decided I wanted the magazine tube and didn't feel like paying more just for the cerakote finish.... I ended up putting on the magpul furniture later on and still saved some money over the magpul version.

I got that version 870 also since I wanted the ghost ring sights and rail. Would have cost me more to have them added later. I did change out a lot of things already though. Got hooked on the 870 even before I got my hands on it. Had ordered the magpul sga stock, single point sling adapter, and forend before I even got the gun in. Put on my condor single point sling and took it out to the range last week.

This week I ordered an aimpoint pro (mainly for my AR but will probably use it on the 870 for HD). Swapped over my magpul afg from my AR to the 870 to see if I like it or not after my next range trip. Also bought a surefire scout led light from PA with their 30% off sale.

Just ordered some internal part upgrades from brownells too like a ss follower, vang comp safety, Carrier latch spring, and Non MIM extractor. Should be it for it except for swapping out that door breach choke that I don't like. Also got a mesa 6 shot side saddle on the way

Aimpoint Pro on your HD shotgun?! Trying to look through an optic at night when you've just woken up to the sound of an intruder will most likely turn out bad.. for you. Just ask JD from AI&P Tactical..he's pretty much the Godfather of everything 870.. He'll tell you to keep it simple..a plain ol' bead sight will work just fine for HD applications. My .02. I'm just relaying the message.

O well, stuck with that I guess. Still happy though.

Was going to say, if a red dot, would put a micro. But for HD, flashlight. I have yet to mess around with it, but I have heard you can get your light to somewhat mimic your spread pattern for an HD situation if done correctly.

Chances are you are using the same mount for your AR as you are for the 870, in which case I highly doubt it will work properly. You need a very low profile mount for a shotgun compared to an AR. See below-

Perhaps because of the issue jessegpresley suggested in the second post in this thread where his hand overshot the forend on a port load and injured his hand between the pump and barrel ring?

Guess the aimpoint is out of the question then haha. Like I said, I bought it for my AR. Figured it'd probably work on the 870 but guess not. The scout will do by itself, just have to figure out how I want to mount it, the magpul scout mount or a different type mount.

Still don't think ill like that afg on the forend for the shotgun but if it helps my wife manipulate the 870 better, it'll stay.

I plan to keep it simple too but I will change out the bead to Tritium.

Also considering the Magpul stock and forearm set. I pinched my finger between the slide and the receiver. That receiver edge is quite sharp. The Magpul forearm will help prevent that from happening.

I saw somebody in the classifieds selling a brand new 870 tactical express with Magpul stock & fore end and with a tritium front sight for like $400
