    Light, SD-Survival 12ga?

For backpacking when you wanna firearm for bears and as well as small game/ upland gamebirds & waterfowl w/o all the weight, what is a good CA legal shotgun that isn't a PITA to pack? Thinking short barrel, composite stock but can take 3 or even 3.5 inch shells. A gun you could strap to your pack's Kifaru Gunbearer and carry comfortably all day for a week or two at a time and also use for home protection. It would take a beating (brush busting) and need to be reasonably priced. I already have a hunting pump w/ 28" barrel but it would be too big for what I'm talking about here.
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000.
The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.

Look for a pump turkey gun with a 20-24inch barrel.

If you want something light and short, maybe a Stoeger Condor Youth 20 gauge O/U? 22" barrel and overall length of 36.5" with a weight of only 5.5lbs. And 20 gauge ammo are lighter too. It doesn't come in synthetic though, but it is very cheap so even if you beat it up it wouldn't hurt too much.

You can also use flush or extended choke with this O/U gun, making it a little more versatile.

Or, if you want the firepower of 12 gauge shells, there's also the Stoger Condor Outback. It is a little shorter at 36 inch but weighs 7lbs.

Must be 12ga, prefer short barrel (16-18"). Gotta be able to stop a bear.

Of course you know, anything under 18" requires a $200 NFA tax stamp to be legal with the feds, and you would be unable to own it in CA.

You also have to be careful to comply with minimum over-all length requirements.

The Win 1300 speedpump is a piece of crap...I own one and hate it. Constant problems and failures. Looking for something I can trust with my life.

I'm not a hunter myself and have never shot a bear, but I'll recommend speaking with experienced hunting guides. I believe there are guides who specializes in hunting bears, they will be a good source of information.

I saw this post which seems to be written by a hunting guide:
The search engine that helps you find exactly what you're looking for. Find the most relevant information, video, images, and answers from all across the Web.

Fairly good information to read up on.

Also, don't just look at barrel length, think of the overall length of the shotgun. The Stoeger shotguns, because they are O/U, have the same length as your typical pump/semi-auto with a short 18.5 inch barrel.

20" mossberg like the one I am selling, but you are too far to buy mine. Buy the basic shotgun from Big-5 for like $300

The reason for a short barrel is for carrying it while backpacking via a Kifaru Gunbearer. Gotta be short and light.

Give some thought to a short barreled double, like the cowboy shooters use. Light, handy and easy to carry and reload. An extra 5 rounds on the stock and you should be ready for any contingency.

The best deal going is a Davidsons Exclusive Mossberg 500 HD catalogue number 52136-MOSS

Total with tax & dros is $354 if ordered thru Lampert Pawn.

I bought one several months ago. Sold my 870 afterwards. It shoots well, it's light weight and the controls are in the right spot, love it.

                              Single shot, like...

                              ...?

You could even buy one of the combos, and have a .22 or centerfire in reserve.
