Talk to me about the 590A1

I found a local guy (here in Canada) who has one NIB I am thinking about purchasing.
Just for a fun gun, I bet if I ever wanted to duck hunt or something like that it'd be cheaper to just buy a used Wingmaster (since I don't think you could get a long barrel for this model).

It's the 590A1 20-inch heavy-wall barrel model with the 8-shot mag and the Speedfeed stock. I hear pretty bad things about the Speedfeed, as in it's prone to breaking. Will it hold up if I never load it with shells?

Is there anything cheap, or bad with these shotguns, or anything negative you can tell me about it? Be critical.

I know the heavy barrel makes the gun quite portly, but right now I have an 18" Police Magnum 870 with a steel receiver and walnut, so I doubt it's any heavier than my current shotgun.

It's an amazing shotgun. There's nothing cheap about it. 9 rounds, heavy barrel, dual extractors... BUT, the speed feed stocks are cr@ppy. All the parts except the springs are plastic. $h!+ can that stock and you'll be good to go.

Just bought one. I paid 560.00 with dross, shipping and everything OTD brand new. I think it was worth it. Its leave and bounds above the 870s until you get into the police model and they are over 700.00 now.

I don't know about leaps and bounds... The dual extractors are nice though. And the police model is nothing more than a metal trigger and rifle sights... Mounting sights on a $560 590a1 will run you a clean $100. Now you're close to $700 in on your Mossberg. Pretty comparable I would say...

I'm not a Mossberg expert myself but while I was looking at clay shooting shotguns, I recall reading something about replacing the magazine tube on the 590 with one from 500, and with that you'll have the flexibility to use longer vent rib barrels.

Hopefully someone here with more experience can confirm this. Or, you can also ask on a shotgunworld.com, they are a forum specialized in shotguns and their posters might know more.

Bought my 590a1 for around 544 OTD back in 2009 came with ghost ring sights.

Great shotguns, mine is super smooth and super reliable. Got around 5 - 6k rounds through it and havent cleaned it after the 2000 round mark.

i have one of the older 590a1's and the shotgun is built like a brick s**** house never had an issue with my speed feed stock

Why do this?? The 590 is essentially a combat shotgun. Swapping mag tubes and barrels? For all the added cost and hassle, you can pick up a baseline trap/skeet/clay gun...

The OP stated that the shotgun is used only for fun, shotguns like these, the fun runs stale pretty quickly. Soon, you'll want to hunt and shoot clays etc. Otherwise the shotgun will just sit in a closet and mostly forgotten.

This is also one of the reasons why instead of a Benelli M2 Tactical or M4 shotgun, which I originally intended to buy, I ended up buying a Benelli Supersport instead.

I'm not familiar with ranges in Canada (never when shooting when I worked for Canadia tech company) but the some ranges here in SF Bay Area don't allow short barrel shotguns (eg. less than 22 inch) to be used in their clay shooting fields/courses. So I ended up with a clay shooting shotgun instead for more flexibility. Something for the OP to consider, but the good news is that it looks like the 590A1 can be converted for hunting/sporting use pretty easily.

You can do that but you're better off just going with the 6 shot 590a1. You can use the barrels from the Mossberg 835 series.

So its gone up $16.00 in 4 years. Not bad at all. I got Ghost rings too. I love it.

All metal internals? I'm pretty sure the only difference material-wise is the cast aluminum trigger guard which by many accounts is NOT as strong as the standard polymer ones. I also believe Remington is doing away with the metal trigger guards and going with the polymer across their Police line up but not 100% certain on this...

Check and get back to me.......... Lets say I have hands on experience. The last 870 I had was my room mates. It left A LOT to be desired.
