Surefires' new DSF is a bust. It comes with a kill power switch that if left on drains the batteries. So, if you mess up and leave that switch on the next time you need the light it is not going to work. I was told today that there is no plan to change the design or recall the current models. I am stuck with them and will have to advise clients of this issue if they want one on their weapon.
The 318 and 618 series had models that also came with a kill power switch, however, you could leave it on for years with no drain on the batteries. I have a 618FGA on the 870 by my bed and the switch has been on for three years and the light works fine.
This is a bad design on this DSF because if you fail to turn the switch on and hit that pressure pad you get nothing. Mr. Murphy will be sure to see you forget. If your light is on a Home Defense weapon and you are awaken at 3am you will have to be clear headed enough to turn that switch on. I will also add that to me the DSF feels horrible in the hand and the pressure switch has been moved from where it was all those years I used the 618 series. Surefire is so proud of the new DSF that effective 12-31-13 the 318 and 618 are discontinued.
