    Mberg 930spx extraction issue

Four times now out of 200 rounds I end up with a spent shell in the gun and the extractor having ripped its way right through the rim of the case. Then I need to knock the spent hull out with a wooden dowel.

The gun is one year old, totally stock. Broke it in with 50 rounds of buck and then 100 rounds of high velocity. Thoroughly cleaned, frog lubed and then the issues mentioned above.

Out of 200 rounds of cheapo walmart ammo, 4 of them get totally stuck after firing and the extractor rips through the case they are lodged that tightly in the chamber.

-What do you think is the cause?
-How do you suggest fixing it?

    Thank you.

Where do I start? First off, I feel your pain. My 930 spx won't function for sh!+. My best luck has been with high base, full power combat loads. Literally dozens of FTF/FTE issues every time I shoot it. I've shot it clean, dirty, wet, dry, upside down and right side up. Maybe I got a lemon, but that being said, I know I can't depend on it. Hence, my continuing love affair with the 870.

The worst part is, I friggin love the damn gun!

      1. Make sure there isn't lube on your chamber or throat.

      2. Make sure you don't use Winchester bulk. That stuff cramp. Has jammed at least once in my 870,500 and 930.

      3. Check for burrs or imperfections in the throat and chamber. It sounds like your cases are swelling around something holding it in sticking then busting your rims off.

What model do you have? I run a combo. I notice the problems seem to run in the SPX models.

If the charge is too hot, then the plastic case might melt and expand and jam in chamber. A common issue among high pressure shells.

Walmart Bulk Shot-Shells will do this a lot. I have eased this event by polishing the chamber with a 1" cotton wheel and Jewelers rouge on my Dremel..

I have a Benelli M2 I use for 3-gun. I stopped using the Wal Mart stuff due to functioning problems. I use WW AA or Rem STS and the problems went away.

It was a Walmart Winchester this time. Rotating them out, sadly I have 100 of them left.

Will give the chamber a quick polish as well.

Sorry to hear that. I've never had a problem with my 930. I just went through 50 rounds of the winchester stuff this weekend, but unfortunately, that's usually the problem in these cases. Even the Walmart Federal stuff is better.
Even my friend's 870 choked up on the Winchester stuff.
You will probably be fine with other brands, and if not, send it to Mossberg for repair. These guns SHOULD run fine on most regular birdshot loads.

+1 on the Wal-Mart Winchester shells. Had the same problem with my 1100 and Benelli M2. Federal Bulk Pack work ok, but I still check the crimps before
using them in a 3 gun match.

I got my 930 SPX used and it loves factory ammo but it has had hiccups with my reloads, binding up in the magazine tube and difficult to extract manually. CK_32, thanks for your input. I will polish my chamber as recommended by gschoelles. Good luck rmatt, I really like my 930.

Are you guys referring to the Winchester Universal from Walmart? Those that came in boxes of 100 rounds and has a black packaging?

I must've been either very lucky or not using the same type of shells. I've shot over 400 rounds of it, #8 1 1/8oz, through my Benelli Supersport without a single problem.

I surprised to read that a Benelli M2 has problem with it because the SuperSport is very similar to the M2.

OP: I have read about similar problems with the Walmart rounds, mostly with Remington 870, on shotworld.com. Some folks there mentioned that they switched to Federal bulk ammo from Walmart, which cost just a little more, and the problem went away. You might want to try that.

Estate is always my second choice for shot if Walmart is out of Feddies.

On my 870 I have had perfect luck with the walmart Winchester packs. It seems to hate the Remington birdshot I have been getting from Big 5 though. Lots of them not wanting to come out of the chamber.

                            @rmatt

You polish everything else.... Polish that 930spx chamber too! I've been reading up on some semi auto shotguns and have seen it suggested for several different ones.

I have a stock, out-of-the-box, 930SPX that I have put somewhere around 600-700 rounds through so far. It's been used almost exclusively in multigun matches and tactical shotgun matches. I've never had a single failure to eject, and only a couple of malfunctions related to feeding. I've run just about every type of round through it, different manufacturers, bulk ammo, bird shot to .00 to several types of slugs. I've really never had a smoother running auto-loader. I guess that just shows how much variance there can be between guns of the same model. Good luck!
