Side shell holders

Looking to put a side shell holder on an 870.

I've used the inexpensive Tac Force plastic holder. Wondering if I should upgrade to the all aluminum GG&G holder.

Another option I'm wondering about are the removable shell holders that attach with Velcro. Any comments or recommendations on that?

If you're planning this for a shotgun class or something where you plan on reloading a lot, the velcro ones are pretty excellent. You rip the empty off, drop it or stuff it in a dump pouch, then slap a new set of shells on.

If it's just for backup ammo, specter gear makes a really nice Carrier and rear sling mount. I have one on my pump -- it's super solid, but I rarely reload from it. For 3-gun, the belt caddies are much faster.

Slap a piece of velcro on your receiver after you degrease it. You can get the velcro at Lowes or Home Depot. It's 2" x 10'.

Order the shell holders from SOEBelts.com for $15 each.

The stock and belt mounted shell holders are really slow to get to into the gun due to their further proximity.

I agree, I have a mesa saddle on my benelli and I dont really like it but I paid a lot and dont wanna take the loss on it. If I could do over I would go velcro all the way.

I had heard that you really didn't want to replace screws in the receiver of an SA shotty (as it required for the "hard" sidesaddles) if you wanted reliability.

I will admit, though, that the "hard" side saddles I have on some of my pump action shotties are easier to re-fill.

If your holder works just run it.

I've run both messa and Tac star. The messa god me more brownie points and looked nicer but both did the same thing. The Velcro was the hot thing for a little while and look kinda cool. Someone did show me one bad thing about them they saw was like if you get snow or something I forgot what on the Velcro it's basically useless. Cool concept tho. I almost bought them then figured if I can get it done with 5+1+6 something is seriously wrong here. Ended up selling that 870 and haven't used one since. I don't see a real need anymore.

I've never tried the velcro type, when I was in the market for a shell holder I ordered a bunch of stuff from Vang Comp and they were out of those.

I ended up buying one from Mesa Tactical, it's a very well made product.

My only issue was the retention tube, it wouldn't keep shells held in place so I called Mesa and they sent me a white tube that worked much better.

The purpose of the 870 is basically HD but would be used as a back-up for the JM in 3-gun. The JM is strictly for sport.

Yes, 1301 Comp, but I don't shoot 3-gun (yet, anyway...) so it is actually is my first line HD shotty at the moment. Chosen for this role as the gun is DEAD RELIABLE - Not a single malfunction of any kind with any ammo I have run through it (yet, anyway...).

BTW: It sounds like Beretta will be launching a 1301 Tactical soon (at the SHOT show?), with 18" barrel (my comp has the 22").
