VEPR 12 and grip wrap question

I just put a VEPR 12 in jail. I'm sort of a newbie to the AK platform. I picked one up this summer after not owning one for a ton of years. I absolutely hate the AK chastity belts on the trigger-guards. Compared to AR bullet buttons (which are a joke), they are a joke x 100.

Being that a key point of a VEPR is the magazine, and being that a shotgun shell isn't going to fit inside a bullet-button very well, I am wanting to go featureless. While I was fondling the gun at the FFL, I was trying to see how I'd like a grip wrap on it. I've never used a wrap such as one from Solar Tactical before. So instead of a normal grip, will my right thumb end up resting against the right side of the receiver? That would place it right on the safety on the VEPR. I could see that being a problem if there's any appreciable recoil, as the safety has some sharp edges that I could envision eating into the meat of my hand as the gun cycled through rounds. Please share your thoughts. Thanks!!

Mag feed shotguns have to have a mag-lock regardless.

CA assault weapon laws pertaining to shotguns are different than those pertaining to rifles and handguns.
So what may be legal for one, may not be legal for another.

There is no "featureless" option for semi-auto shotguns that use detachable magazines. [PC 30515(a)(7)]

Therefore in order to be CA legal, semi-auto shotguns that use detachable magazines must always have a maglock/operate using a fixed magazine.

        Penal Code 30515
        (a) Notwithstanding Section 30510, "assault weapon" also means any of the following:
        (6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
        (A) A folding or telescoping stock.
        (B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
        (7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
        (8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
