Cheek Relief

So I took out my new 870 express yesterday and shot 3 round of trap (75 total shots) and at the end of it, my cheek bone had a nice little welt (lump). It didn't affect my shooting but just wondering if there is something I can do differently to prevent this in the future as today my jaw and cheek are a bit sore? Initially I thought I was placing the rifle too low but now I am not sure.

How was your shoulder after the second round?

I'm sure either way it was sore. After my second round I'm starting to feel it. Only thing I can think of is your not mounting it properly. Maybe try putting your face against it a little more. Maybe ask a vet shooter at the field if he could teach or help you and see what the issue is

shoulder is fine, not sore at all. It also didn't affect my shot as on all three rounds I hit at least 18/19 of 25 clays. I should also not that other that a few times as a teenager (12 plus years ago) I have never shot a shotgun so it could very well be my technique.

But still he shouldn't have a soar cheek. I've only seen that with the knoxx recoil stock but that's from the way that stock is built. I'm curious to see how the force is being pushed up into his face. Never heard of that before.

I would think it's the gun mount. You may be lifting your face just a bit to watch the clay.

Have someone watch to see if you're picking up your head slightly to look.

When I switched to lefty my gun hurt my cheek at first. You probably need to work on your mount. Your gun should be held firm against shoulder n cheek when you shoot.

I would agree with the mount suggestions. I had a bad lump the second time I shot trap. I had a good trap shooter buddy watch me shoot and he pointed out my flaws. Shot a 24/25 next round with hardly any cheek soreness.

Well... Shotgun go "BIG BOOM" so i figure somebody had to be the voice of reason on this post. Sometimes a day at the range will leave you feeling it. Stop letting the "BIG BOOM" beat your face up.

Another benefit of good mount is that you'll soon be shooting 25s.

You probably shouldn't have a sore cheek if you're mounting the shotgun consistently and properly...lots of times folks will lift their cheek away from the stock when the clays fly at a hard angle left or right (which also causes one to miss)...so that may be what's happening to you.

I couldn't tell I was lifting my head slighlty but my buddy saw it right away. He gave me pointers like twisting at the waist more when following the clay.
